Beth Paxson
Spring term has flown by amidst unprecedented challenges of new ownership, relocation, and a worldwide pandemic! It is with deep appreciation and gratitude that I commend the community and staff of PYC in our practice of the philosophy of yoga, being flexible and adaptable to every obstacle we have encountered so far! As the season shifts, we are keeping pace with the ever-changing landscape; our Summer term unfolds with several significant changes worthy of acknowledgement.

With the end of Spring term, our one and only Betsy Allen announced her retirement from practicing PT and teaching weekly yoga classes. This milestone brings to a close several decades of work in two practices rich with integrity and expertise. We will deeply miss seeing Betsy every week, but honor her decision and her promise to be available for upcoming workshops, special focus classes, and substituting.

With Spring came the powerful punch of COVID19. Our ability to adapt to a new teaching platform and bring our practice to you online was met with an overwhelmingly positive response. We are excited to be able to safely maintain continuity of practice by carrying on with Zoom through the summer. Over the summer there will be some new names and faces appearing both on and off screen.

Starting this month, there will be two new teaching interns showing up in the Monday Beginning Level classes. They will be 'spotlighted' each week to teach a pose in their respective classes. Keep an eye out for several free classes each of them will teach over the course of the summer.

August is traditionally the month when Julie Gudmestad holds her renowned week-long Anatomy Awareness in Asana Workshop. This year's pandemic caused us to cancel the event. In its place, we are offering an online series of three 2-hour workshops with Julie, aptly titled 'Taste of Anatomy'.

Teaching online will never replace the many gifts that come from being live and in person with all of you. In this challenging moment in our history, this is a remarkable way to make contact and support our community with this wonderful practice of yoga.

Namaste,
Beth Paxson

TASTE OF ANATOMY
Online Workshops with Julie Gudmestad

Since offering the live, in-person Anatomy Awareness in Asana week in the studio isn't a possibility, we are instead offering three 2-hour workshops to keep your interest in anatomy alive. These workshops are designed to help improve your poses, protect yourself from injury and deepen your practice. The online presentations will be recorded and will include a digital handout with illustrations of the highlighted anatomy.

These classes are intended for teachers, and practitioners with at least one year of asana experience. YA CE credits are available for these classes.

The workshops are:

PROTECT YOUR KNEES IN YOGA, August 4 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Knees can be vulnerable in yoga poses. In this class, we'll study a little anatomy to help you understand how to protect your knees as you practice, and which poses to practice to help keep your knees strong and healthy.

STRENGTHEN YOUR ABS IN YOGA, August 6 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm
We all know that strong abs are important to help support the low back, pelvis, and internal organs, but they also form the foundation of some of yoga's most challenging poses. We'll move from beginning to advanced ab work. With this gently progressive sequencing, you may be surprised at what you can do!

OPEN YOUR SHOULDERS FOR YOGA, August 8 from 10:00 - 12:00 pm
The shoulders are potentially among the most flexible joints in the body, and we need every bit of their mobility in yoga poses. However, many students come to yoga with tight shoulders, and need specific help to identify which poses to practice to improve flexibility. After studying some anatomy of the shoulders, we will practice poses to open them in all 3 dimensions.

The cost of the workshops is $60 each or all three for $150.

New Teaching Interns/Free Classes

We have two new teachers we are integrating into our teaching staff.  Level 5 student, Christina Bernunzio and Level 4 student, Denise Jones will be interning over the summer, preparing to take over Level 1 classes in the Fall. Both women recently completed RYT 500 training and come to this internship with a strong sense of purpose, commitment and passion for our style of teaching and practice.

Each of them will be offering a free class each month of the summer. This will be a great time to discover who they are and experience their teaching style. The first dates are coming up at the end of June. Reserve your space here.

Denise on Wednesdays at 9:30 am on June 24, July 8, and August 12.

Christina on Mondays at 6:00 pm on June 29, July 27, and August 24.

A Note From Betsy
To my students and colleagues, past & present

Betsy Allen
I want to take this opportunity to send a BIG Thank You for the incredible memories I am able to take with me into retirement!! I have always felt blessed to be one of those folks that gets to do what they love for 'work'. How absolutely lucky is that? I am forever indebted to Julie for convincing me to come on board nearly 30 years ago.

What an awesome and loyal community of students we have. It has been my utter pleasure getting to know you and sharing my love of yoga with you over these many years. Let me just say the studio is in excellent hands with Beth at the helm. I've been awed by her perseverance, openness and flexibility (See what yoga can do!). It is easier leaving, knowing that I'll be back to teach workshops and to substitute when needed. Maybe I'll teach a weekly class with a theme for a month... Who knows. You'll love the new studio! It's beautiful!

Betsy's flowers
With retirement, I'm giving myself more time with John and Roscoe (the pup) and with family and friends. I will also have more time for gardening, hiking, travel (someday) and yes, yoga. I also plan to resume hobbies like playing the piano and guitar, tennis, reading, and mosaicking. Even sewing, as I've told some students I may start sewing bolsters.

And of course, what would retirement be without a hammock? We set ours up between the cedars last week. Stay well. Practice.

Hugs & Namaste,
Betsy Allen
