AUSD Announces 2020 Teacher of the Year

AUSD announced today that Brian Dodson, a second/third grade teacher has been selected as our 2020 Teacher of the Year. Mr. Dodson has been working at Maya Lin School - an arts-integrated, inquiry-based elementary school - since 2012. His colleagues praised him for his professionalism, commitment to supporting students, ability to connect with families, and willingness to provide leadership to other staff. Our full press release  has more details.

Ruby Bridges Speech from 5th Grade Promotion

The real Ruby Bridges - who in 1960 became the first African-American child  to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South - gave an inspirational message during the 5th Grade Promotion Zoom Ceremony earlier this month.

"We all know, even as adults, how stressful and difficult and very uncertain this entire year has been," she said. "We as educators, leaders, parents - we've been committed to [our students] every step of the way through this...We need them to know that we are expecting good things from them. I've always said that we as adults - somehow we always manage to underestimate the power of children. Being a child, myself, going through that experience, I totally understand that [children] too have power. They may be thinking there's nothing they can do, but there's something that each and everyone of them can do. There's a mission, a reason, why every living thing is here."

You can watch the full speech here. (Principal Pharr-Matthews' introduction of Ms. Bridges begins at about 15:30.)
Zaretta Hammond spoke to AUSD educators about how culturally responsive teaching supports the development of powerful learners.
Educators Prepare for Next Year via Six-Day "Learning Conference"

To prepare for next year, AUSD educators attended a six-day "Learning Conference" last week that focused on remote learning and trauma-informed teaching strategies. The conference modeled the same kind of "blended learning" that AUSD students may engage in next year - a mix of live meetings, collaboration, and independent work - and gave educators a chance to learn more about the technology platforms they will use next year, as well as skillful ways of teaching, assessing, and creating community with their students. You can learn more about the conference here

HOPE POSTER
Alameda High School Student Creates BLM Posters

Alameda High School senior Thai Le recently emailed his teacher Andrea Szeto to thank her for her support while he was a student in the school's Multimedia Career Technical Education pathway. Thai also sent her some posters he designed honoring the Black Lives Matter movement. Thai's posters feature a black background with a list of names in white typeface of black citizens who have died at the hands of law enforcement in this country. At the center of the graphic is the word "HOPE" above a clenched fist, and in two of the posters, Thai included an inspirational quote (one from Martin Luther King, Jr. and one from Tupac).

"As an artist I think the most important thing right now is to inspire," Thai says. "Inspire hope and hope to change."
AUSD Poll About School Schedules; Board Meeting on June 23

A reminder that we have sent a poll to all families about our schedules for elementary and secondary schools next year. Did you miss the email? You can find the poll in seven languages on our Planning for 2020-21 web page, along with background about our Redesign Task Force and the planning process.

Please also note At the June 23 Board of Education meeting, staff will be presenting survey and poll results from the last several weeks, as well as a recommendation for school schedules for next year. We encourage the public to tune in to the meeting (which will be held via Zoom) to learn more about the thinking behind the recommendations. The meeting will start at 6:30 pm; the agenda (including the Zoom details) will be posted  here.
