This final edition of our newsletter marks the end of the year, as we wind down and prepare for 2020.
We hope you've had the opportunity to participate in our various events throughout 2019. If not, we still have the annual Soccer (or should we say, Football) Tournament and one more Technical Tuesday next month.
As we plan for future events, we seek your input, feedback and involvement to improve and meet your needs! Whether it's learning, social or networking, please let us how how we're doing. Join us at our events or online on our LinkedIn/Facebook sites. Better still, join our Executive Committee and help us to develop and grow.
Lastly but most importantly, we want to THANK YOU, along with our volunteers and dedicated committee members, for your support. Singapore might be a little red dot, but with your help, our affiliate is proud to be an active and hopefully, valuable contributor to the industry.
So until we meet again, we wish you a great year-end and happy holidays!
Best regards,
Your ISPE Singapore Affiliate

our first Hackathon Winner
Earlier this year, I was granted the opportunity to participate in a hackathon organised by ISPESG upon invitation from a friend in ISPESG (student chapter). This was a novel experience for me, being the first hackathon that I have ever participated in. When I initially signed up for the hackathon, I thought it would be a good avenue to network with working professionals, while getting a chance to better understand the industrial landscape, enabling me to better prepare for my future. Ultimately, the hackathon turned out to be a far more enriching experience, exceeding my expectation on the educational front, while simultaneously providing me an invaluable opportunity to befriend peers from foreign countries.
As an educational medium, the hackathon was very effective, allowing me to test my knowledge in a real-world setting. The hackathon was based on a real-world case regarding a company's decision to outsource production of a pharmaceutical product facing patent expiration. Participating in the hackathon required me to take myself out of the academic setting and look through the lens of a working professional. It was extremely helpful to have teammates such as Rachel, and mentors such as Jian Wei and Tina to consult, as they already had a few years of working experience and were immensely helpful in aligning whatever theoretical knowledge I had with practical real-world experience. I am extremely grateful to our esteemed judges who took the time out of their busy schedules to come down to offer criticism and suggestions on our work. Their input allowed me to better understand the perspective of an experienced professional and compare how these perspectives align with the theoretical knowledge I currently possess. One message from the judges that particularly stuck with me was how we cannot base the decision to outsource production to a country solely on a single high-profile incident of poor GMP and that we should not "Judge an entire country due to a few bad eggs".
Additionally, the hackathon provided me an excellent opportunity to experience working with a multinational and multicultural team. My team consisted of a mix of young professionals, graduate and undergraduate students, each from a different country. I am extremely appreciative of the opportunity to work with this team of motivated and highly capable peers. Despite having differing perspectives, we worked very well together, bouncing ideas off each other in a productive and meaningful way, while pushing each other to do better in a supportive and encouraging manner.
I believe that this cooperation was ultimately the key factor behind our team's success in group category. In a similar vein, while only I was fortunate enough to be awarded the position of best performer, I would like to state that this achievement was only possible because of the collective effort of the team. Many of my talking points during the pitch had been first suggested and researched by other members of our team, and I attribute my success in this hackathon largely to contributions of my teammates.
All in all, this was a great learning experience that I will continue to reminisce for years to come. Through the hackathon, I had to the chance to meet teammates, consisting of peers who are doing excellent work in their respective countries. The opportunity to interact and gain insights into the thought processes of some of the most experienced members of the pharmaceutical engineering sector, particularly Dr KPP Prasad, who I find especially inspirational, as he is an alumnus from the same pharmacy course I am currently studying. I would like the thank the organizing team led by Charles for providing this excellent opportunity for me to learn and grow. I greatly look forward to joining the next hackathon, either as a participant or as a member of the organising committee.

Have you ever felt that despite people being very active and agitated, achieving their deliverables, presenting green KPI's... your problems don't go away? This is what we term
"managing in the wrong jungle"
.
So how can we address it better?
