Dear St. Louis Families,
Happy Friday! It certainly has been an unusual week for us as there were instances where snow was in our forecast and then disappeared. Please remember that we do follow Fairfax County Public Schools for inclement weather announcements and St. Louis will always follow up with a school specific statement about our plans for any inclement weather. You will receive a school email and there will be social media blasts as well. While there were some disappointed students, I do believe God knew we needed to get our classroom Valentine celebrations completed before the long weekend.
Next week our 40 days of Lent begin, where we collectively shift our focus to prayer, penance, and doing something kind for others. All of our priests will be visiting classrooms to distribute ashes on Wednesday, February 17th and pray with the students. Students in K-8 will prayerfully reflect and walk with Jesus through weekly Stations of the Cross in the church; it will be done a little different due to COVID restrictions on gathering size. K-2 will attend Stations of the Cross on Mondays and 3-8 will attend on Wednesdays in 2 different time slots. We are grateful that we can still continue to walk with Jesus during Lent.
It is also Kindness Week next week. While students at St. Louis do a great job of exhibiting kindness on a daily basis, Mrs. Cotnoir has designed some creative ways the students can include kindness toward others in a special way all week long. Stay tuned! In addition to her social-emotional lessons with all grades, Mrs. Cotnoir has done an amazing job of checking in with all of our students, our teachers, and our families. I want to share how blessed we are to have Mrs. Cotnoir on our Hawk team---National School Counselor Week was recognized Feb. 1-5 but it got overshadowed by Catholic Schools Week, so I wanted to ensure we recognize Mrs. Cotnoir for all of her efforts and talents in taking such good care of our community.
Please join us for a Coffee and Connections Zoom Thursday, February 18th at 9:00am for all parents. Rachel Bailey will join our community again for some great tips and strategies—see the message below for more information. It will be recorded if you are not able to make the date/time.
As the Lenten Season approaches, let us all pray for one another in a special way as we continue to navigate these COVID challenges with grace, patience, and flexibility. Wishing your family a wonderful long weekend!
Peace,
Anne M. Dyke
Principal

******Travel Policy Amended*****
COVID numbers in the local area and state are trending downward which is a great thing to see. As such, St. Louis will continue to monitor and evaluate all local public health guidance and will follow any state travel restrictions put in place by Virginia and/or the CDC. For now, anyone who travels out of northern Virginia will NOT need to e-Learn upon return at this time. We remind families to continue to be mindful and proactive to the greatest extent possible about traveling and remember to practice good healthy hand hygiene and wearing masks.

As we approach the one year mark of COVID-19, I am hearing that many feel like they are “hitting a wall”. You or your child may be plugging along well one day and the next is a different story altogether. Please know that all of those feelings are okay and there is help available should you need it. To the right is a list of resources you can access for yourself or for your child. As always, I am available to help and support and can be reached at [email protected] or by calling 703-768-7732.

Fostering Internal Motivation in Students
You want your children to do what they’re supposed to do. But your yelling, begging, bribing, and punishing don’t seem to motivate long-term responsible behavior. In this workshop with Rachel Bailey, you'll learn how to foster children's internal motivation so that kids do the right thing... even when it's the hard thing.

Hawk Tree House
The Hawk Tree House is a student operated supply store at St. Louis School. The store is open for on-line orders only of pencils, erasers, jump ropes, stress balls and masks. Students should work with their parents to place the order and send in the money. Orders will be filled two times per week.
The Hawk Tree House website and order form can be found under the Student Life tab on the St. Louis School website or using the following link: Hawk Tree House (google.com)
The store was created and will be operated by students in the middle school options program. The goal of the project is to provide students with 'real world' experience as it relates to math, money, technology and service. All product and money handling will be performed within strict COVID safety guidelines.
The Hawk Tree House was not designed to incur a large profit. All proceeds earned through the supply store will be donated to charity. The students have selected Catholic Charities - COVID Relief for the initial charity. The students plan to rotate the charity every couple of months. Thank you for your support!
