I'm alerting you and asking you to SAVE the DATE and mark your calendar now for a March event near you to learn What's in Your Water!

While environmental groups are pointing out the chemical and manufacturing companies that have contaminated our drinking water, WILPF is focused on Exposing the Pentagon: The Hidden Polluter of Water.

WILPF IS telling the other half of the story to highlight that the military knew about the contamination that was harming people living on bases and in nearby communities -- and kept silent.  WILPF is exposing the military's responsibility for the current environmental and health crisis in California and nationwide.

I invite California WILPF members to meet Pat Elder and hear him speak at the WILPF branch event near you. Pat is an investigative journalist with civilianexposure.org, and he's working with WILPF for this tour. From March 7- 20, he will visit 20 California cities and military bases. Take a look at the comprehensive website  which Pat has created for this WILPF Earth Democracy project.

Additionally, WILPF is hosting two Bay Area forums, March 21 in Berkeley and March 22 -- World Water Day in San Francisco.

Mark your calendar now for the tour date near you! See the schedule of local events at the end below.

Pease join the tour sharing conference call!

Preregistration is required.  Click here to preregister.

At the forums, Pat and other panelists will inform us on What's in Our Water? They'll talk about Exposing the Pentagon: The Hidden Polluter of Water and NEXT STEPS for action. Read the forum programs and biographies of the speakers here

We'll hear speakers like Denise Torri and her daughter Lauren, who was born at George Air Force Base in southern California. Thousands of women going through orientation, upon reporting for duty at George, were told not to get pregnant - but not why. Lauren drank formula mixed with contaminated tap water. She and Denise have suffered years of serious gynecological disorders. So has Lauren's daughter. We are honored that these women who were at George will join the two forums to tell their stories.

The forum details and tour schedule, with complete information on times and locations, are here.

What's in Your Water?

A toxic group of "PFAS" chemicals was developed in the 1960s to make consumer products heat, grease, stain, and water-resistant (think Teflon and Scotchgard). Over decades our land and water have been contaminated by the irresponsible use, storage, and disposal of the chemicals and manufacturing waste. Now, as a result, we have a nationwide drinking water and health crisis, with 98% of us having PFAS in our blood. It is even in umbilical cord blood and breast milk!

Read the words of WILPF member Patricia Hynes, retired Professor of Public Health, who will speak at the forums:

water glass
Earth is a water planet. The US military is among its largest polluters from fossil fuel use and toxic chemicals released into groundwater, rivers and coastal waters worldwide. Among the most toxic contaminants are PFAS chemicals, present in firefighting foams used on military bases.

Known as "forever chemicals" because of their long life, they are widespread in California drinking water. We must challenge militarism and military pollution and  advocate that our public agencies regulate and remove these hazardous pollutants  that endanger public health. We have a national public health crisis, including in our statewide drinking water!

What You Can Do
  • Help Earth Democracy and WILPF build the movement to "Expose the Pentagon." To spread this important information, we want a full house at each city on this tour and at the forums.
  • Please attend -- and invite friends who are interested in clean water issues, including those outside of WILPF. Let's expand awareness of these health threats!
  • Use the generic color or black and white flyer. Just print out and fill in the information for the local event near you that you can find here
  • Consider wearing a WILPF button or sash at our event, so other members can find you. Order buttons and sashes now! Catch up with WILPF friends and make new ones.
  • Keep an eye on the Earth Democracy webpage to find out more!
