Christian clichés (re)visited!!
It’s summer. People are on vacation. So we will focus on something a little “lighter"... a look at what is (inaccurately) known as “Bumper Sticker Theology,” or otherwise seen as Christian clichés. We will discover how or when these quaint sayings came about, and then how to rectify them. What version would accurately reflect scripture and be encouraging/challenging to our following Christ?

This year’s Peach Festival will be held on Saturday, August 28 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. All proceeds raised will benefit Hope International and the three missionary teams we support working in Honduras, Asia Minor and India. Our 2021 Peach Festival will feature:

· Information tables that will showcase small groups and ministries

The book sale is back!
After a long rest, the Peach Festival is returning, and so is the used book sale.
Books, games, puzzles, DVDs, and vinyl records are acceptable and welcome. They may be left at the church from August 2 through August 25 on the designated table in Overholt Hall.
Please do NOT bring text books, sets of encyclopedias, inappropriate books, magazines, out of date electronic material, or books in bad condition.
Books will be on sale from August 3 through August 28. Payment will be in the form of cash (exact change only or an extra donation to the church), checks, or an IOU. Someone will be available on Sundays and the day of the Peach Festival. Otherwise, payment is on the honor system and can be turned in to the church office or slid under the office door. (Place cash or IOU form in envelopes provided on the donation table.) Any IOUs must be paid for on or before August 28. Remaining books will be donated to Buckingham Friends Peace Project at the conclusion of the Peach Festival. All proceeds benefit Hope International and our missionaries.

August Mission of the Month: Life Abundant Ministries |

Outreach Ministries is happy to partner with Life Abundant Ministries for our August Mission of the Month.
This in-prison and post-prison ministry was developed to assist inmates, ex-offenders, and their families to develop Christian principles in their social, economic, and spiritual lives.
The services that Life Abundant provides for incarcerated and recently released persons are: regular chapel/church services, teaching and mentoring. Regular chapel/church services are led by staff or volunteers and create a place where inmates or post inmates can develop a more positive image of themselves. Teaching consists of bible studies that introduce spiritual development and help to illustrate good decision making while helping to improve overall writing, reading, and comprehensive skills. Mentoring provides discipleship opportunity, which is believed to be an important part of reentry into society. Mentors leading bible studies let the inmates know that they are valued, thus helping to reestablish their self-esteem.
The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 16:9, stated that "a great and effective door has opened to me." Please take this time to open the door for Life Abundant Ministry, a ministry that has proven that it cares for the incarcerated, by contributing to our August Mission of the Month. Please use the pink envelops in the pews to donate. Mark your check and envelope with Life Abundant Ministries or you may donate online using the link to the right.

Staff Snapshot: Stephanie Hume - Music Director |

|
We welcome Stephanie Hume as DUMC’s new Music Director. Stephanie is well qualified and experienced, and knows and loves this church deeply. But she has also trained and nurtured many young (and now older) voices that we hope will be encouraged to be part of the music ministry because of her! In addition to directing three children choirs and the youth choir, Stephanie will also be directing the Sanctuary Choir. This will mean organizing all the groups, their choice of music, and scheduling when they sing. The Sanctuary Choir and liturgical service have exciting times ahead!

Let's get to know Stephanie a little better:
Stephanie Hume was born and raised in Rhode Island. She received her Bachelor's degree in Music Education and worked on (but didn't quite finish) her Master's in vocal performance. During this time she was assistant director to two university choirs, directed the Madrigal Singers, and began and developed a swing choir. After college she moved to Pennsylvania, where she has lived ever since (except for a year and a half in Michigan). She has been married to Randy Hume for thirty-five years and has three children, Donald, Ainsley, and Sophie.
Before working at DUMC, Stephanie held positions as the adult choir director at two churches and the soprano soloist at a third. She has been doing the children/youth choirs for twenty-eight years now, and while she loves working with the kids (and hopefully they like her back!), she says that she has probably earned her parent-given title of "Choir Nazi"!
Stephanie has been teaching voice on and off (mostly on) for over forty years and now teaches at the Doylestown Conservatory of Music, where she has taught for close to twenty years. She recently left the role of DUMC Preschool Music teacher, which she served in for thirteen years.
While it has been a while since she taught adult choirs, she is looking forward to stepping into this role in addition to her other choirs. Her goal is to grow the choir (maybe with some alumni from Youth Choir 😉) but also keep singers that sang under the leadership of Barbara Tull. After all, there's no substitute for experience!

Hello Friends!
I’m excited to announce our first study for September. The Chosen is an online mini-series about Jesus’ ministry. I find it compelling and revealing to see an actor portraying Jesus speak the words we have only read. The stories become so much richer within the context of the setting and surrounding characters. (See preview at right.)
Our eight-week bible study will start on Sunday, September 12 at
6:30 pm in person! Our class time is expanding to 8:30 pm (due to the length of the video). We will watch and then discuss each episode. The workbook we will be using expands the story, explains the characters, and includes questions. It costs $13. If you preregister by August 20, I’ll have your book available for porch pick-up the week of the study. If you would like to order it on your own, go to Christianbook.com or Amazon.
I hope you will attend Pampered By Grace Bible Study starting in September and engage with Jesus in a totally new way! And yes, we will have snacks. 😊

Rise Against Hunger - THANK YOU! |

Thank you to everyone who contributed prayers, donations and themselves to our Rise Against Hunger meal packing event on July 24. We packed 10,152 meals over three one-hour shifts. Each shift had approximately 25 people. It was a fun and rewarding afternoon.
We have now packed 160,758 meals in 13 events! With over 25,000 people dying worldwide every single day from hunger and hunger related illnesses, mostly children, this event took one small step towards providing meals and sustainable help – education, agricultural, water resources – to those in the greatest need.
Thank you to all our Champions who helped make a better life for another person!

Friends are such a blessing in life. To have someone who really knows you, cares about you, can even finish your sentences, makes life easier and more fulfilling.
Friendship doesn’t just happen. It takes nurturing and spending time together, learning about each other. Having someone who listens and shares life’s ups and downs means you are never truly alone.
A relationship with God has many of the attributes we ascribe to friendship. Our Lord knows you, cares about you, knows what you are thinking and the choices you might make. Jesus is willing to give you guidance and aim you in the right direction.
But that relationship doesn’t just happen. It takes nurturing and spending time together, learning about each other.
Sound familiar? God seeks out those who are paying attention and want to learn. Generous with His wisdom, God wants to guide you through the ups and downs of life. Our Redeemer is a faithful companion who is not looking to judge or punish us, but rather He wants to love us unconditionally. We are never alone.
Sensing God’s presence and direction takes time to develop. Reading scripture helps you know Jesus, see the choices He made and hear His wisdom. Attending worship, fellowshipping with other Christians, and praying fine tunes your senses.
Make it a priority to spend time daily with God. Start with 30 seconds and build from there. God promises to show up.
“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 29:12-13

A search is in progress for a man wanted by the Handbell Choir. So far, he has eluded detection, but he may be in the area. It is hoped he will turn himself in to the bell authorities, who are on the look-out. He is believed to be between 20 and 80 years old, with a desire to ring bass bells. If he has a prior record in another choir, that would be great. However, if he has no prior record, but just a desire to try something new, there are no qualifications necessary. Training is available.

Sunday School, Kids’ Word @ 11:11, and Nursery Care will return on September 12, and we couldn’t be happier! Registration will be out at the beginning of August. However, we need YOU to make it all work.
While we have enough volunteer teachers to kick things off, we still need more hands to ensure that the program can continue through the year. So, can you invest an hour once a month in the spiritual growth of your child and the children of our congregation?

Do you remember the first day of the school year? Remember being excited about going in with your new clothes and backpacks? There are some who don’t have the luxuries of these new items. Can we help out?
Once again, DUMC will be supporting the children served by the Methodist Home for Children in Philadelphia by collecting backpacks and school supplies. The next time you head to Target and places like it, please consider picking up some supplies to help out some children in need.
Look for the bins under the portico or in the lobby of DUMC now through the month of August to collect new backpacks and new school supplies. Simply drop them off and we will make sure they are delivered to the children. No time to shop? Contact me to make a donation, and I'll do the shopping for you.

***DUMC continues to experience a monthly operating deficit (e.g., expenses exceed the income) before special giving as shown in the chart above in red. However, our congregation has been truly generous with extraordinary giving with yet another special unrestricted gift of $26K received in June to be used towards operating expenses. As mentioned in previous reports, at the end of 2020 we received an unrestricted donation which allowed us to begin the year with a healthy cash balance. Then, again, in January & February, as you can see in the table above, members have stepped above and beyond the normal monthly giving and provided the church with additional gifts to support our operations (noted as special giving). We are so grateful to God for his blessings on the hearts of our church members.
As many of you know, the summer months can be financially challenging for DUMC and we ask that you prayerfully consider continuing your monthly/weekly giving during these months as we continue to work towards achieving our goal of positive monthly cash flow so we can retain a consistent healthy cash balance. Expenses will be increasing as we bring back staff so that DUMC’s music program is fully operational in the fall. This is an important commitment for our church as organ music, choirs (children, youth and adult), and handbells are all vital programs in building our church family.
DUMC is open for in-person worship and meetings, and we WELCOME YOU BACK. We hope to see you at the Summer Fest on Saturday, July 31, and the Peach Festival on Saturday, August 28.
Thank you to our staff and the congregation for their continued support…but thank you most of all to our Heavenly Father…for He has provided and hears our prayers!

Thanks so much for the huge response to our July 28 assembly! One hundred eighty meals were assembled in about an hour and a half with seven awesome women! Thanks to everyone who contributed!
