Marin County Commission on Aging
March 3, 10-11am
“Alzheimer’s Disease: Causes and Consequences.” When we can’t recall a name or remember where our keys are, many of us worry that it may be an early sign of dementia. However, few people truly understand the signs and causes of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Investigating the physical changes in the brain provides a better understanding of the causes of dementia, possible inheritance patterns, and ways to maximize the health of our brains and hopefully minimize the chances of memory loss. By attending, participants will: hear about the types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s and Vascular Dementia, gain more knowledge of the causes of dementia and why changes in the brain lead to a wide range of symptoms, and learn methods to enhance brain health and memory. Presenter: Dr. Patsy Harvey, OD, MPH, Clinical Professor at the University of California at Berkeley, School of Optometry and Vision Science.

Did you know that our nutrition and physical activity needs change as we age? You may experience changes in appetite, dentition, body composition, or organ function, all of which may affect what and how much you choose to eat. Discover special nutrition concerns for the older adult. Learn which nutrients you may want to focus on, and advice on how to develop and maintain healthy eating habits. Hear about food safety as well as helpful shopping tips. Speaker: Jenna Ray, Registered Dietitian (RD), Senior Nutritionist for Marin County’s Aging and Adult Services.
