For our next meeting we will be reading Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh.
The most nostalgic and reflective of Evelyn Waugh's novels, Brideshead Revisited looks back to the golden age before the Second World War. It tells the story of Charles Ryder's infatuation with the Marchmains and the rapidly-disappearing world of privilege they inhabit. Enchanted first by Sebastian at Oxford, then by his doomed Catholic family, in particular his remote sister, Julia, Charles comes finally to recognize only his spiritual and social distance from them.  Click here for more information.

We will meet Sunday, October 18th at 4pm. If the weather is nice, we will meet on the Marty's back patio.  We will have a Zoom backup if needed.  Email Sheila Marty to let her know if you would like to attend.

Private Prayer Update

Father wants anyone who needs to spend time in the church in Private Prayer to have that opportunity.  Having the church open only during certain hours on Tuesdays does not seem to be meeting that need.  We are going to take a break from that schedule and instead offer that if you would like to spend some time in the church, come by the Parish office and we will let you in on an individual basis.  The office is open from 8-12 and 1-4 Monday through Friday.
If you have questions email Sheila at smarty@stjohnsea.org.

Dark Clouds Over a Closed World
Last week I introduced Pope Francis' new encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, which in English means "we are all brothers and sisters." In the next few weeks, I would like to share with you more of this important and timely document. Today, we will take a look at Chapter 1: Dark Clouds Over a Closed World.

Chapter one asks the reader "to consider certain trends" which are counterproductive to "universal fraternity":  Read more...
This year we are joining with the school in studying the Beatitudes.
Walk humbly with God...
How does this theme look in our families, school, and community?
We can walk humbly with God through the beatitudes! In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught His disciples (and us) about how to be perfectly happy (Heaven with God). In other words, He taught us how, in our earthly lives, we can live out the purpose for which God made us. Jesus taught us 8 ways of living called Beatitudes, so that we can begin to be perfectly happy with God in Heaven.
Each month we will focus on one beatitude and how everyday saints, like you and me, can live out this beatitude.

Beatitude of the month
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
The poor include both literally poor people, in need of basic necessities, and figuratively poor people, who are aware of their spiritual poverty, people who acknowledge their need and utter dependence upon God.
The reward mentioned here is nothing less than the kingdom of heaven. What do we consider to be our family's greatest riches?
Flowers can help us to "see" the beatitudes in a different way.
The Columbine can remind us to be humble because it looks like it is bowing its head to pray. When we bow our heads and pray to God we humble ourselves before him. We are poor in spirit when we acknowledge that we are sinners who need God, and that everything we have comes from him.
