What's Up KEA?

Snow Days and the End of the Semester

The district and KEA have agreed that the end of the first semester will be adjusted by two days to maintain the same number of days in first semester. This will shift the grade reporting by the same number of days. Since many staff and families have planned on being away on the Friday workshop day, January 24 will remain a non-student day for the purpose of working on grades/progress reporting.
Semester Overload Agreement

This agreement will impact middle and high school classroom teachers who may be experiencing overloads; as well as, the counselors and registrars who are working on second semester scheduling.

For the second semester of 2019-2020 only, an individual classroom teacher may agree to waive the maximum class sizes contained in Section 7.2.A. of the CBA. Individuals shall receive a supplemental 0.2 FTE contract for second semester if they agree to waive this limit. This agreement does still restrict the maximum to 165 students daily in middle school and 175 students daily in high school. If you have any questions about this agreement, please email us.  Human Resources will notify KEA of any teacher who agrees to waive the maximum class size at secondary. Obviously, we have in interest in assuring that members are making the choice without any pressure.

While we recognize that both of these agreements may have unintentional impacts on your work, these decisions were not made lightly and we continue to hear directly from members which led us to these decisions.

Kent Schools Foundation Opportunity

The Kent Schools Foundation was originally formed through a partnership of the Kent Education Association and individual school board members almost seven years ago. After two annual fundraisers now, the Foundation is now fully functioning and ready to continue growing to support students and staff in the Kent School District.

The Kent Schools Foundation has announced their Classroom Enrichment Grants for the 2019-2020 school year. The application process is simple and it is now open at their website. If you have a specific enrichment need in your classroom or school, this is a great way to access funds to support that need. Grant applications must be received by January 24, 2020.
