EMPOWERING A CARING COMMUNITY THAT PROMISES THE WELL-BEING OF EVERY CHILD
November 2019
Promise Partners mission includes helping families to go through good and challenging times, strengthening individuals and families to overcome adversity and "turn lemons into lemonade" as we transform challenges into opportunities.
Promise Partners' continuum of services strives to build resilience in children and families. Our impact can be charted against the 5 protective factors identified in the Center for the Study of Social Policy's Strengthening
Families framework. These protective factors reflect characteristics of families that protect against risk and poor outcomes for both children and families and promote strong families and optimal development for children. Each protective factor summarizes many
research studies that demonstrate how each characteristic works to achieve the positive outcomes we want for all families.

Protective Factors:*
  1. Social and emotional competence of children
  2. Concrete support in times of need
  3. Social connections
  4. Knowledge of parenting and child development
  5. Parental resilience

Expressing Thanks and Practicing Generosity
Iowa State Extension and Outreach, November 2019

Each year, as the month of November nears, I begin thinking about the Thanksgiving traditions that have been so meaningful for my family over the years. The annual "turkey trot" walk / run happens each year at the high school I attended. Another amazing tradition - a local volunteer and her family generously provide a free Thanksgiving Day meal to anyone who attends, no questions asked.
You, too, may have family traditions that are special at this time of year. How can we use this time of year to teach the values of generosity and thankfulness to our family members?
One way to teach others how to be thankful and generous is to model that behavior during our everyday routines. Children who see their parents volunteering at school, church, or for something in the community learn that good things can happen when people work together. According to The Child Mind Institute, it is normal for children to be self-involved, therefore, parents must intentionally teach how and what service and generosity look like.

The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous.

Alice Barton Scholarship Program

The Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV) offers scholarships intended to increase protective factors (economic and education attainment) and improve health outcomes.

The Alice Barton Scholarship Program works to empower survivors of domestic violence through education and job training (protective factors in overcoming adversity and harm).  Economic abuse is a common and effective tactic batterers use to control their victims.  Financial barriers persist even after a victim successfully leaves her abuser.  By enabling victims to gain new knowledge and skills, the Alice Barton Scholarship Program helps victims increase their self-confidence, find better employment, and achieve economic independence.
