Congratulations Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson!
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation as a Supreme Court Justice is historic. She is the first-ever Black woman to serve on the Court, marking a critical shift in the Court to better represent the people it serves. We know that Judge Jackson alone cannot rectify racial and gender inequities that persist across systems, but we are hopeful that her nomination signifies a revival of justice and truth-telling on the Court.

How We Stand Against Racism
Our team is on a mission to eliminate racism through our work everyday at YWCA and in our communities. This year, we are coming together to deepen the work and share actionable steps to Stand Against Racism. Here's what a few of our staff members shared:
-
Jamie Kendrick, Front Desk Receptionist: "I've been following the journey towards the new school for Evanston residents of the 5th ward, historically the ward with the largest Black residential population. As socio-economic demographics change in Evanston, I believe it is the duty of white privileged residents to resist gentrification and bolster the voices & political power of Black Evanston leaders and residents."
-
Kathy Slaughter, Chief Development Officer: "I stand against racism by working to ensure that fundraising messages and images serve to promote equity and don't reinforce racist stereotypes."
-
Susan Zimmermann, Residential Operations Manager: "I enjoy participating in equity trainings, and have been a part of local SEED sessions in Skokie. This is a community group of people who volunteered to meet once per month to discuss topics of equity and diversity. It helps center me recognize racial power dynamics in all aspects of my life"

2022 Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate
Juneteenth, Sunday June 19, 2022 @ 7:30 am
Floyd Long Field, 2436 Sheridan Rd, Evanston, IL
5/10K Run/Walk, Youth Mile/Half Mile
Each year, the Race Against Hate brings together thousands of people from all over Chicagoland to run and walk in unity against racial hatred and violence. The event memorializes Ricky Byrdsong, former Northwestern University men's basketball coach and Vice President of Community Affairs at Aon Corporation, who, while walking with two of his young children, was murdered by a white supremacist in 1999. After modifying the event for the past two years to accommodate safety protocols, we are thrilled to once again come together as a community on this Juneteenth to raise awareness and funds to support the YWCA's anti-racism and violence prevention services.

Juneteenth, now officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people which occurred two and a half years after the emancipation proclamation and originated in Galveston, Texas. Evanston Present and Future’s founder Kemone Hendricks joined the fight and spearheaded local efforts four years ago to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Click here to learn how you can contribute to the success of Evanston’s 3rd Annual Juneteenth Parade while uplifting our Black community!

Thank you Mather Evanston!
The residents at Mather Evanston have been steadfast in their support of YWCA. Because of their awesome fundraising efforts, we were able to purchase kitchen supplies for our new domestic violence shelter. In addition, their fundraising efforts will ensure that students in our YW Tech Lab program have new laptop computers. The staff at the Mather have also supported students in our YW Culinary program by offering mentorship and job training.

Many nonprofits are working to increase racial equity and justice in the communities they serve, but struggle with applying an equity lens to their own internal operations. Even when leadership sets inclusion as a goal, organizations may not have structures in place to sustain meaningful change. In this workshop you will explore key concepts of racial equity and inclusion, and how they intersect with your organization’s core values.

On the third Wednesday of each month, the YWCA hosts “Let’s Talk @ Lunch” as an opportunity to talk THROUGH the issue of racism (instead of around it). This is one way to deepen our shared language and understanding of equity by looking at events and institutions through a racial equity lens. Introducing YWCA's New Equity Learning Sessions
Since 2016, we've held an annual Equity Summit, bringing together community members and equity practitioners to share emerging frameworks, models, and practices with the hopes of advancing racial equity and transforming our communities. This year, instead of a two-day convening, we are sponsoring unique learning sessions throughout the year led by community facilitators and special guests.

If you are a person interested in growing your toolbox for transforming yourself, your community, or your institution toward equity, click here to share what you want to learn.
