Our Response to COVID-19: Information
Globally
Good evening,

Large COVID-19 flares, in many countries have contributed to the biggest global number of infections detected in a single day: 146,743 new cases, which is 20,533 more than yesterday's already massive record. As mentioned throughout the week, the top three countries with the most cases, the United States, Brazil, and Russia, are still either growing wildly (Brazil) or stuck on a high plateau (USA, Russia), while Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Qatar are flaring up in the middle east. Peru, Chile, and Mexico in the Americas are also unable to control their nation's coronavirus aggressive spread. In Asia, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh also saw near record numbers today. South Africa and Egypt are still very much in the heart of the coronavirus battle on the African continent, with no sign of letting up, while Cameroon and Nigeria are starting to show unwanted growth.

As Brazil sees record deaths, Bolsonaro proclaims: Death is "everyone’s destiny"
The coronavirus outbreak in Brazil has steadily worsened as death rates have surpassed Italy’s, and the country has become the second-leading nation in the world in infection rates, behind the United States.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has repeatedly down played the severity of the virus calling it “a little flu” and when asked what he would say to Brazilians who have suffered from the pandemic, he said death is “everyone’s destiny.”

Coronavirus restrictions reinstated in Jeddah for 15 days
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior has announced a series of restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Jeddah that will last for 15 days.
The restrictions will come into effect from Saturday and are a response to an evaluation of the health situation in the city by the relevant authorities.

Global Forecast
This week in the rankings, India has moved up past Italy and Peru above Germany.
In the US
The US saw a big jump in COVID-19 numbers today, partly because Michigan authorities added 4,928 probable cases to the state's daily tally, almost 20% of the US total for the day, and also because a few states reached new peaks on their infections curve, including California, Utah, and North Carolina, while Florida and Texas continued their upward trends, with near record positive test results.

In California
California reached a new apex today, confirming it has become the new epicenter of the coronavirus spread in the United States. Many other states are also sounding the alarm: North Carolina, Utah, Alabama, and Arkansas. California has overtaken the nation's third rank, having accumulated more confirmed COVID-19 cases than have been identified in Illinois, and now sits behind New York and New Jersey. Assuming New Jersey and California continue on their current respective paths, California will overtake the second spot behind New York in about two and a half weeks.

  • COVID-19 California cases: 126,408 (+3,742)
  • COVID-19 California deaths: 4,558 (+74)
  • COVID-19 California death rate: 3.61%
In the Central Valley
Madera County announced 14 more cases today, the highest yet one-day total for the county, confirming the local spread is trending up, with 51 new cases -- 33% of the Madera County pandemic's total -- discovered in the last 6 days. The combined coronavirus cases from the 7 local counties added 464 new infections and 3 new fatalities for the day. Just as it did last week, the unusually high one-day number was boosted by the Kings County prisons, which confirmed 265 new infected inmates last night. The central valley is contributing to the overall trend in the state of California, which is now unveiling more cases than anywhere else in the nation. To date, California has tested 2,238,463 of its roughly 40 million residents.
