Most of the items below are reminders about previously shared free global education, language learning, and study abroad opportunities open to DC educators and students. This is prime time for applying for great federally funded summer 2021 and even SY2021-22 programs. We urge you to take advantage - and help us share this information with others who may have an interest. OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATORS

Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program
Travel Dates: Summer 2021
Application Deadline: December 18, 2020
The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program, funded through the US Department of Education, offers short-term international summer programs for US educators in the social sciences, arts, and humanities to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. Two summer programs will be offered in 2021 to K-12 educators – to Iceland (for K-8 educators) and to Morocco (for 9-12 educators). A third program to Mexico is available to postsecondary educators. The program is open to teachers, administrators, librarians and curriculum specialists. It covers airfare, lodging, and program costs; participants pay a $650 cost share. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents with at least 3 years of full-time experience in their field.

Fund For Teachers
Program Dates: Summer 2021
Application Deadline: January 21, 2021
This is a unique opportunity to design your own global professional learning experience! Fund for Teachers enriches the personal and professional growth of teachers by supporting them as they pursue opportunities that will have the greatest impact on their practice, the academic lives of their students, and on their school communities. Due to COVID-19, this year Fund For Teachers will only support fellowships within the continental US (experiential or online). Full-time PK-12 teachers, with at least 3 years teaching experience, may apply for up to $5,000 individually or a team of teachers may apply for up to $10,000 for a summer learning experience of their own design.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES Abroad) Program
Program Dates: 2021-22 School Year
Application Deadline: December 8, 2020
The YES Abroad Program, sponsored by the US State Department, offers American high school students and recent graduates full merit-based scholarships to live and study for one academic year in countries of strategic importance. For SY2020-21, students may live in one of the following countries: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Morocco, North Macedonia, the Philippines, Senegal, Thailand, and Turkey. The program includes home stay and high school experiences that are intended to increase mutual understanding between American youth and young people abroad, and to deepen appreciation for religious diversity. Participants also gain valuable immersion in a less commonly taught language. Applicants must be US citizens, 15-18 years of age, and in high school at the time of application.

Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP)
Program Dates: Summer 2021
Application Deadline: December 21, 2020
IYLEP is a four-week, fully funded, US-based cultural exchange program for both Iraqi and US high school students who demonstrate leadership potential and civic engagement in their communities. It is designed to develop leadership and peacebuilding skills, foster relationships between youth from different backgrounds, and promote US-Iraq mutual understanding, During the program, US students will join their Iraqi peers to engage in experiential activities and workshops in three program sites - in Vermont, a host city in the US, and Washington, DC. This US State Department funded program is administered by World Learning. Applicants must be US citizens, 15-17 years old, and have completed at last one year of high school.

US Youth Ambassadors Program
Program Dates: Summer 2021
Application Deadline: Dec 22, 2020
The US Youth Ambassadors Program is a 3-week leadership exchange abroad for US teens ages 15-18 and adult mentors, sponsored by the US State Department and administered by World Learning. The program provides full scholarships for students and adult mentors to take part in exchange programs to countries in South America and the Caribbean, focusing on civic engagement, social entrepreneurship, social justice, multiculturalism, and environmental protection.  World Learning is also recruiting adult mentors for these exchanges. Intermediate level Spanish is required for all exchanges, except to Brazil. Program organizers are assessing the COVID-19 situation, and may adapt these in-person exchanges to virtual or hybrid if necessary.

High School Diplomats (HSD US)
Program Dates: July 21-Aug 1, 2021
Application Deadline: January 15, 2021
HSD US is a fully funded 10-day summer program at Princeton University that provides 40 American students the opportunity to engage in academic and social pursuits, and forge lifelong friendships with 40 Japanese students of the same age. During the program on the Princeton campus, each American student is paired with a Japanese roommate. Only high school sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply.

Congress-Bundestag Vocational Youth Exchange
Program Dates: 2021-22 School Year
Application Deadline: January 15, 2021
This is a fully funded gap year or 13th year abroad for graduating US high school students with a vocational or career education background. Co-funded by the US Congress and the German Bundestag, and administered by Nacel Open Door, this prestigious program is for high school graduates, 18 or 19 years old by July 1 of the departure year, and US citizens, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Prior German language study is not required. Participants will engage in two months of intensive German language training, host family placement, training/school attendance, and hands-on experience through an internship with a German company. (Germany is known internationally for the excellence of its vocational programs.)
