GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER.
     November  2019

The Girls EMpowered (GEM) group at
Hillandale Elementary School had a great excursion to  DuPont State Forest last week and learned some wonderful things about waterfalls, trees, and plants from Ranger Jane Dauster. They also learned how to read a map and use a compass. Many thanks to our Women United members for making GEM possible for these fifth grade girls!

At United Way, we fight for Henderson County families in times of need

Julie and Bill had been out of touch with their brother Hal, a Korean War veteran, for several decades when they suddenly got word that he had shown up at the VA hospital dehydrated and confused. Hal was diagnosed with dementia and would need full time care. Julie and Bill were suddenly called upon to become their brother's caregivers. They were unprepared, overwhelmed, and desperate for answers as to how they would care for their brother while keeping their jobs and tending to the rest of their families. Hal was about to be discharged from the VA, but the paperwork to authorize payment for Adult Day services would take about two weeks to go through. This family needed help, and they couldn't wait two weeks for it.

United Way's partnership with MountainCare Adult Day Services covered the costs to enroll Hal immediately after he was discharged from the VA. That quick response meant everything to this family. MountainCare provides a safe and engaging day environment for individuals with Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and dementia. Participants benefit from a variety of activities and essential services like showers, nutritious meals, and medication management while they are at the center. Hal loves coming to MountainCare each day, and enjoys many of the activities and social opportunities at the center, including the twice weekly Veterans' support group meetings. Julie and Bill were able to return to work, and received the support they needed to make caring for Hal part of their lives.
We Thank You for Living United in 2019
