Please pray for leaders

of scouts and UM Men

By George Hohmann

President, W.Va. United Methodist Men

Blessings and Happy Spring!

As we enjoy warmer temperatures and Spring flowers, I ask that you pray for Scout leaders and the West Virginia United Methodist Men’s Executive Committee.

Both groups will meet April 9 at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Weston.

The Scout leaders will continue planning for Circuit Rider 32, which is scheduled Sept. 9-11, 2022, at WVU Jackson’s Mill. The United Methodist Men’s Executive Committee, which sponsors Circuit Rider, will discuss that event and will continue working on:

* The Annual Gathering, scheduled Sept. 10, 2022, at WVU Jackson’s Mill and online.

* The Arnold Eddy Memorial Golf Outing, which will be Sept. 9, 2022, at the Tygart Lake Public Golf Course near Grafton.

* The fundraising campaign to refurbish the All Faith Chapel at WVU Jackson’s Mill.

* Relief for the people of Ukraine.

For more information about the West Virginia United Methodist Men, visit our website at http://wvcummen.org.

In addition to the above, I again request that you pray the Lord sends both groups additional laborers. Both groups are comprised of older individuals and both groups need new, enthusiastic, optimistic followers of Christ to take up men’s ministries and Scouting.

I thank God you are continuing to minister to men in these turbulent times and I pray daily for your local church’s men’s ministry.

Blessings, George

Volunteers needed

At Camp Kootaga

As Scout leaders prepare for summer camp season at Camp Kootaga, near Parkersburg, they have identified many things that need to be done to get the camp back into shape.

Camp signage needs to be repaired and repainted, trails need to be cleared, buildings need to be cleaned, log structures need oiled, and shelters and campsites need to be cleaned up.

Workdays are scheduled every weekend from now until May 29. Please consider bringing your Scout unit out for the day to help, or schedule an outing for the weekend and spend a couple of hours working on a project while you’re there. You are requested to speak with Camp Kootaga leaders ahead of time if your project requires special tools or materials, which will be provided.

A list of projects is posted on the Buckskin Council website under the Camp Kootaga page, https://www.buckskin.org/camping/campkootaga/ Please sign up and contact John Baker at john.baker@scouting.org or James Bennon at jamesbennon@financialguide.com with your availability and the project you would like to work on.

The 350-seat outdoor chapel at Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America’s premier High Adventure base, in Cimarron, New Mexico.

Men’s Foundation approves grant

to help rebuild chapel at Philmont

The United Methodist Men’s Foundation has approved a grant to help pay for materials needed to rebuild a 350-seat outdoor chapel at Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America’s premier High Adventure base, in Cimarron, New Mexico.

Steven Scheid, the director of the Center for Scouting Ministries at the General Commission on United Methodist Men in Nashville, Tenn., said Philmont has depended on the faithful to build, repair, and sustain the large chapel and several other chapels at Philmont since 1938.

“Each year 25,000 youth and adults come to Philmont to trek into the Rocky Mountains,” he said. “Their trip begins with outdoor worship, setting the stage for the Great Creator to create in them anew. I know the depth of impact that outdoor worship in the chapel had on me. I saw it impact youth, both Christian and non-Christian.”

The $600 grant will help pay to replace the top boards on the outdoor pews and refinish the cross that stands behind the altar. Scheid said the needed wood is being supplied and the team that will do the work is bringing their own tools and carrying their own costs. All work is scheduled to be completed by May 1.

The life of the project is expected to be 15 years, serving 300 Scouts a service each week for 14 weeks. “This opens the door for worship for 63,000 Scouts,” Scheid said.

The mission of the United Methodist Men’s Foundation is to provide financial support for the General Commission on United Methodist Men and its ministries.
