Our Mission: "Multiplying Leaders, Ministries and Healthy Churches"

OUR ATTITUDES TOWARD "OUTSIDERS"
"Levi gave a large dinner at his home for Jesus. Everybody was there, tax men and other disreputable characters as guests at the dinner. The Pharisees and their religion scholars came to his disciples greatly offended. "What is he doing eating and drinking with crooks and 'sinners'?" Jesus heard about it and spoke up, "Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? I'm here inviting outsiders, not insiders-an invitation to a changed life, changed inside and out" (Luke 5:29-32, MSG).

All of our churches are developing the heart of Jesus to connect with outsiders, which is thrilling! We want to be a church with a focus on outsiders, being Christlike in our ministry. Thom Rainer gathered some main reasons why some churches do not evangelize and focus on outsiders. Here are 10 of his results, organized into mistaken attitudes, beliefs and behaviors.

Mistaken Attitudes

1. Some Christians are apathetic and have no sense of urgency to reach spiritually lost people.

2. Some church members focus more on "getting my needs met" rather than reaching outsiders.

Mistaken Beliefs

3. Some churches have beliefs that focus more on what they are against than what they are for.

4. Some churches believe and use an ineffective strategy of "you come" rather than teaching Christians that "we go."

5. Some church members wrongly believe that evangelism is only the role of the pastor and paid church staff.

6. Some church members no longer believe Christ is the only way of salvation.

7. Some Christians no longer believe and share the truth of the gospel for fear they will offend others. In too many places, partisan thinking on political issues is replacing the gospel.

Mistaken Behaviors

8. Some Christians and church members do not befriend and spend time with outsiders.

9. Some church members are in "retreat mode" as the culture becomes more worldly and unbiblical.

10. Some churches have so many other activities that they are too busy to make evangelism and outsiders a priority.

We are so thankful that evangelism and reaching outsiders is a primary focus for our churches on the Chicago Central District! As we study churches that are healthy, growing and multiplying throughout the world, without exception these are churches with a focus on outsiders.

Thanks for reading, for praying and for serving. "In our prayers, we always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel...we are confident that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion..." (Philippians 1:3-6). You are loved. You are prayed for. In our Mission Area gatherings, we look forward to seeing you soon!

DISTRICT ASSEMBLY AND CONVENTIONS

Mark your calendar for our 2020 District Assembly and Conventions. This is a fantastic time where we gather as a district family to reflect on the ways God moved in 2019 and look toward the future together.

Our SDMI (Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries) banquet will be on Friday, March 27 at Kankakee First Church of the Nazarene. The NMI (Nazarene Missions International) and NYI (Nazarene Youth International) Conventions will be on Saturday, March 28 at College Church University Avenue.

The ordination service will be on Friday, April 17 at College Church University Avenue and the District Assembly business day will be on Saturday, April 18 at Gathering Point.

We are looking forward to gathering as a district to celebrate!
SUPERSTART!

CCD will be taking a group from our district to SuperStart!, an event hosted by an organization called Christ in Youth. SuperStart! is geared toward  preteen students  and features high energy worship, age-appropriate lessons, opportunities for small group activities, and fantastic real-life application for preteens to grow in their walk with Christ. This year, we are opening this up to students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades.

SuperStart! will be held in Naperville on  March 20-21 . The main sessions will be at the Yellow Box Church, then our group will head to Naperville Trinity Church of the Nazarene for games, meals and lodging. The cost for the event is $50 for students and $35 for chaperones.

We would love for you to bring a group of preteens from your church!  Please spread the word  to the families of preteens in your congregation. Please email Anne Whalen if you have any preteens from your church who would like to attend!

DS VISITS

We enjoyed our time with the College Church Primetime group on Tuesday evening. We all wore our favorite sports team shirts, enjoyed stadium food and delicious soup...and some fun with our "referee" Stan Martin!

We enjoyed spending Sunday morning worship with Pastor Tina Burton at Resurrection Community in Kankakee.

Last Saturday was our district Board of Ministry Day. Fifty five candidates interviewed to receive or renew their district license. We are so grateful for the work of the Board of Ministry as they invest in the lives of our pastors.

PRAYER REQUESTS AND CELEBRATIONS

Please continue to pray for Bill Luttrell and his family. Bill is the pastor at our Wilmington church. Due to the development of some new lymphoma growths, he is considering treatment options and appreciates prayers for God's wisdom and also for healing!

We would love to hear any prayer requests or celebrations from our district pastors to include in our weekly communications. Please email us so we can lift each other up!

If there is any way we can serve you better, please let us know!
