Staff Notes

DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION,
SOMAYA BERNARD

Happy June everyone! I know virtual meetings are just not the same. We all miss face-to-face interaction and it's really hard to not be together right now. But it's so important for us to keep connecting with each other any way we can. I've enjoyed seeing the kids every Sunday for RE and watching them interact with each other. We get to laugh and play and it's so good to keep building this community even when we can't do that in our physical space. I really encourage everyone to come and check out what's going on and see some friendly, familiar faces!

Here are a few things that are going on in CYRE this month:
  • Our Youth Sunday RE class is taking a break for the month, but will be meeting again at the same time in July.
  • The Middle school and high school youth group however will continue to meet on Tuesdays at 7 PM. This group is open to all who ended the school year in 6th-12th grade.
  • Children's Sunday RE will continue to meet as usual.
  • Keep your eye out for a survey we'll be sending out to CYRE families so we can get a better idea of what next year should look like.
If you have any questions at all please email me at [email protected] or text/call me at 937-694-0594.

IMPORTANT NOTES FROM OUR ADMINISTRATOR
Welcome to summer!

Now that we've begun the month of June, from a financial view it's important to remember that this is the final month of the 2019-2020 fiscal year (as it ends on June 30th). Why is this important? Because this is the time to make sure all those pledges made in July 2019 are paid in full by the end of this month. A pledge made isn't worth much without the actual funds  that fulfill it.

As of Wednesday, June 3rd, 90% of the pledge money promised has been contributed, which only leaves $23,880 due by June 30th. If you have already paid your pledge in full, we THANK YOU for your continued commitment of MVUUF. If you aren't sure, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] and I can give you that information.

WORSHIP FOR THE WEARY
*** NEW DAY & TIME ***
Thursdays, 6:30 PM, on Zoom
We've been offering this shorter, more reflective service as a way of providing a bit of peace and comfort during these trying times. We "gather" online using Zoom (click  HERE to join us!) for music, readings & reflection. The services are NOW held on Thursdays, 6:30 PM, and will continue every Thursday at the same time, for as long as needed.

We hope you'll plan on joining us!

LABYRINTH & GROUNDS
Even though we're not there physically, the flowers are blooming, the grass is growing, and our MVUUF at home is sitting pretty, waiting for the day we return to it.  We do need to do some grounds upkeep in the time that we are away, though.

Gail Cyan has lovingly restored the labyrinth, so it is ready for a solitary meditation walk.  She is seeking assistance to maintain the path and the literal growing edges around it. There are some immediate needs while we are early in the season, and some ongoing needs. Please contact her or me to find out more. You would be doing the work on your own (or  alongside   people with whom you are sheltering), due to social distancing.

Also, we have some tall grasses that need to be cut back, bushes to prune, and weeds to pull. If you need some "garden therapy," please let me know that you can go over and help. Any amount of time is appreciated!

VOLUNTEER ON THE TECH TEAM
Have you been watching services and wondering what is going on behind the scenes to make it happen?  Do you enjoy hosting online meetings?

Come play with the Tech Team on Sunday Mornings! We could use a few more helpers to expand our team. If you have some experience hosting online meetings, this is a great place for you to volunteer with a small commitment. The only equipment you need is a computer and an internet connection. We will provide you with training so you can confidently fulfill one of the two roles. Contact Kristen Beireis at [email protected] to find out more or sign up.

OUR CHOIR IS USING ZOOM!
Wednesdays, 7-8:00 PM, on Zoom
Our Director of Music, Sara Davis, wants to make sure you know that the Choir is continuing to use Zoom every Wednesday evening!

If you are currently a Choir member (past, present, or future) make sure to join them! All you need to do is click  HERE on Wednesday evening, beginning at 7:00 PM and you're all set!

Showing Up for Justice

CONGREGATIONAL READ
Centering: Navigating Race, Authenticity, and Power in Ministry, edited by Mitra Rahnema
Saturday, June 20th, 10:30 AM, in a Zoom room

SOCIAL ACTION EFFORTS IN LIGHT OF COVID-19
Social Action is coordinating  with Rev. Kellie, Pastoral Care and the MVUUF Disaster Recovery Team to respond to covid 19 needs.  MVUUF members are invited to make financial  donations to the MVUUF Disaster Fund. You will find the MVUUF Disaster Fund listed under "Other Fundraising" on our website's Giving Page or you may mail a check to MVUUF with "Disaster Fund" in the memo line.  Because MVUUF still needs our funds for operating expenses, now more than ever, please  donate to the Disaster Fund only if you are able to also continue to contribute to MVUUF operating expenses. The Disaster Fund will be used for economic assistance for those affected financially by covid 19 and for assistance to specific covid 19 relief needs in the greater Dayton area.  Requests for financial assistance for individuals will be confidential and  should be made to Rev. Kellie.  Contact Kristen Beireis at [email protected] or Tina Porter for more information or with suggestions.  Volunteer opportunities and suggestions for them can be shared  via the MVUUF Disaster Recovery Team on Facebook.

If you would like to help with  or  request assistance for the food pantry contact Steve Steel at  [email protected] . Several MVUUF members are collaborating with greater community members to organize assistance to our newest immigrant neighbors who do not have as much access to covid 19 relief as others.  For more information on that, please contact Social Action leaders Bill Ross ( [email protected])  or  Lynn Buffington ( [email protected]  or 937-657-0426) or Immigration Action group leader Jen Linck at  [email protected].

ST. VINCENT De PAUL LUNCH
Saturday, June 13th, 10:45 AM, 120 West Apple Street, in Dayton
In this age of coronavirus we  will be accepting financial donations to purchase some or all of items for the June 13th lunch.  You may donate by sending a check made out to MVUUF with memo line "St. Vincent's."  Please mail to 8690 Yankee St, Dayton 45458.  Because MVUUF still needs our funds for operating expenses, now more than ever, please only donate for St. Vincent's if you are able to also continue to contribute to MVUUF operating expenses.

For June, we will follow a COVID-19 plan similar to what we followed in April and May. We will need a few people  from MVUUF to prepare larger-than-normal quantities of sandwich fillings and salad and  deliver those to the outside door at St. Vincent's.  St. Vincent's staff will serve the meal. Please contact Lynn Buffington for more details at [email protected] or 937-657-0426.
