Dear Wonderful Lovejoy Community:

“If your habits don't line up with your dream, then you need either to change your habits or change your dream."
-John Maxwell
On Monday we will celebrate the life and accomplishments of a man with an incredible dream, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His "I Have a Dream..." speech changed the world forever. Not only because of the words, but also because of the actions he demonstrated and upheld.
Dr. King did not have this great idea and then simply talk about it. He was tested repeatedly. In 1956, Dr. King's house was bombed, seven years prior to his 1963, "I have a dream..." speech.
|
|
He ultimately gave his life for his dream a short five years later, not just talking about his dream, but invigorating others to live it just as he did. However, with the ultimate cost, his dream lives on even today.
Commemorating the life of a tremendously important leader, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day each year in January, the month in which he was born.
What many people do not know is that August 28, the anniversary of Dr. King's 1963, “I Have a Dream…” speech, is called "Dream Day."
His life is a great reminder and lesson for us to reflect on the difference between a dream and wishful thinking.
For example, many students wish for an A in their classes. However, it never fails that so many of them scramble at the end of the grading period to try to make it happen.
I remember dreaming that I wanted to be able to score 20 points in a basketball game. Funny thing was, I never would take enough shots or put myself in a position to take the right shots in order to even make that happen. First, I was going to have to work to be in the right position to take a shot, and then secondly, I was going to have to have the courage to
take the shot
!
Eventually it all began to come to reality. In my senior year, I had three games in which I scored 20 or more points. Nevertheless, it took hard work to get there and more importantly, I had to not let the fear of missing the mark cloud my desire.
|
|
Far too often, we do the very same thing. We, as the leaders of those whom we influence, have settled for the cloudiness and quit taking “shots” at the very things we dreamed for.
Sometimes, we just are not willing to make the day-to-day choices to make things become a reality. No dream ever came to fruition without some form of sacrifice. Our actions speak louder than our words.
I am reminded that it is not just the performance that matters, it is the "what you do before you even enter the contest" that decides the outcome.
Let the remembrance and celebration of MLK’s birthday not go to waste. Let it be a constant reminder of how important having a dream is, and how much more important the striving toward it becomes.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said,
“Shallow men believe in luck... Strong men believe in cause and effect."
Do not rely on a lucky break to make your dreams happen.
Even more importantly, let us be sure to equip all whom we influence with the tools to know how to strive for a dream, get up when knocked down and keep pressing forward to make the dream even sweeter when we get there.
I think that kind of effort would make Dr. King proud.
