PARTNER SPOTLIGHT:
ATS Apprenticeship Program

Garry Clark, President and CEO of Economic Alliance Snohomish County, recently visited ATS in Everett to learn more about their in-house Apprenticeship Program, which is part of a workforce development program.

Garry had the opportunity to tour the facilities and check out the hands-on, practical skills training they have provided for over 150 people since its launch in early 2019. While on the tour, he saw many former apprentices working on the hanger floor as skilled aircraft mechanics, some of whom are now certificated. Garry and ATS also discussed the need for businesses, schools and community organizations to partner together to build a workforce that will provide long term stability.

Innovation Sprouts: Experiment Update

Darrington School District, in partnership with Snohomish STEM Network, engaged students in the State of Innovation Challenge back in March and they brought their plans to life through support from Snohomish STEM and Boeing Global Engagement.

Students wrapped up their school year by taking home a science project they have been working on in class – growing potatoes in buckets. Students, along with the help of their teachers Zacharie Bass, Ray Franke, and Eileen Draper, conducted experiments growing potatoes from starts. In true science fashion, the first batch of potato starts failed to sprout causing students to analyze the data and make changes before trying again. With more success the second time around, students enjoyed their time dedicated to maintaining the potato garden; a few potatoes even got nicknames including “French Fry”.

This was one of their first hands-on lessons upon returning to in-person school and it became a memorable project. Some students took their potato buckets home to continue the experiment over the summer with plans for a potato cookoff when they return in the fall. Sounds like a tasty experiment!

NASA Launches: Mission Equity
Lee este anuncio de prensa en español aquí.

NASA is launching Mission Equity, a comprehensive effort to assess expansion and modification of agency programs, procurements, grants, and policies, and examine what potential barriers and challenges exist for communities that are historically underrepresented and underserved.

“NASA is a 21st century agency with 22nd century goals. To be successful, it’s critical that NASA takes a comprehensive approach to address the challenges to equity we see today,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “The agency’s new Mission Equity is a bold and necessary challenge for NASA to ensure our programs are accessible to all Americans and, especially, those living in historically underserved communities across the country. Because when NASA opens doors to talent previously left untapped, the universe is the limit.”

STEM BRAIN TEASER
Puzzle:
A 20-foot-long fence needs to be painted. If Business A can paint the fence in 3 hours, and Business B can paint it in 6 hours, how long would it take if both Business A and B work together?

Answer is below.
Reference: Chris Woods, Daily STEM
LET'S GET SOCIAL
Answer:
The fence would take 2 hours to paint.
A can do ⅓ of job in an hour, B can do ⅙ of job in an hour, so together they can do ⅓ + ⅙ = ½ of the job in an hour.
