THIS SUNDAY'S SERVICE
REV. SALLY FRITSCHE
Sunday, October 18 at 10:15 a.m. via Livestream

Have you witnessed sudden demand this year for things like sourdough yeast, chest freezers, toilet paper, and canning supplies? Join us this Sunday to reflect on the ways we prepare for disasters, and what our different preparations might reveal about us. Together we’ll consider the many possible futures that lie ahead, and recommit to a preparedness grounded in community care and UU values.

Saturday, October 17

How often do we think of ourselves as a community within a community? Unitarian Universalist churches are both sanctuaries and beacons of hope in communities around the country. What is our role in creating healthy inclusive churches that live up to the promises of Unitarian Universalism? We invite you into a Youth and Adult Spiritual Development Workshop with Paula Cole Jones to explore these questions and more. The 4-hour class will be held twice – Saturday, October 17 or Saturday, October 31 from 10 AM to 2:30 PM. Click here to watch a brief interview between Michele Grove and Paula Cole Jones that explains this exciting event.

Message from Board Chair Brian McDermott
As the Dream Team is in the midst of soliciting further feedback regarding the draft strategic Plan, the Board agreed to assist in the process by moving their regularly scheduled Study Session from October 13th to the 20th. We will hear the results of the assembled feedback during that study session. Our Business meeting will remain the same date as scheduled: October 27. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, your Board Chair.

UUCUC'S "BUDDY SYSTEM"
Staying connected while
UUCUC facilities are closed

During this time of social distancing, staying in touch and checking in with each other is going to be very important. We hope you will consider being part of our "Buddy System" so we can care for one another.

You can sign up here: https://uucuc.breezechms.com/form/2184f1. Buddies will check in with each other regularly by phone to provide connection, companionship, and connections to help if needed. This is a great way to help each other.
JOYS AND SORROWS sent to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org for last Sunday, October 11.

From Adelaide Aime: Joy that after a 35-year career in social services, I retired recently from my position as Executive Director of RACES (Rape, Advocacy, Counseling & Education Services). I look forward to re-connecting with church friends, gardening, and traveling when it is safe to do so.

From Amy Robison: A joy - after a month of bouncing between hospital and rehab, my mother-in-law is strong enough to move into a new assisted living facility. Her three sons and I did the packing and moving on rotating, socially distanced shifts. A sorrow: my younger cousin Paul had been on a ventilator after having a stroke last week. He passed away Saturday afternoon.

From David Gross: Saturday evening, Claudia Gross was in the Carle E.R. where a too rapid heart rate was restored to normal rhythm. Claudia is now home and OK.

From Barbara Jauhola: Still very concerned about my sister Sue, who is having some post-surgical heart issues which are delaying her release from the hospital.

From Jody Hanger: Love and strength to all the college kids out there trying to figure out how to be an engaged student this year. Sorrow: I was sad to read Sunday morning that Durango Mendoza had passed away unexpectedly - I knew him just a little bit, but he was an amazing photographer and sculptor - a wise and kind man.

From Adam Davis: A joy that my brother Daniel moved to Urbana this past January to be near our family. This Tuesday, I will be joining him on his final walkthrough of a house that he is purchasing in Urbana. We're thrilled!

From Ellen Jacobsen: Joy that I have a little hope that we may have a better election and sorrow that I fear that polls are all wrong again.

From Umeeta Sadarangani and Marilyn Ryan: Joy that on October 12, our twin nephews turned 18 and Umeeta’s father turned 85. For the first time in 18 years, we won’t be together on the birthday weekend, but we are grateful for all the years we celebrated together and look forward to the future.

Please send your joys or sorrows to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org any time before the Joys and Sorrows portion of the service each Sunday. They will be read aloud.
