February 4th
to share an informational
presentation with the Oregon
Senate Education Committee
about this report during legislative session.

Word of the Month
Access:
the ability, right, liberty, and/or permission to enter, use, or engage in
a particular facility, program, or group. In afterschool, barriers to access include transportation, food, fees, waiting lists, language, cultural expectations (for example, girls stay home and take care of younger children)
and in some areas,
lack of any program.

Mind the Gap Spring Conference April 17th & 18th
Registration Opening February 18th for only $100 per day
The Spring Conference "Mind the Gap" is right around the corner! OregonASK and the Oregon Association for Education of Young Children (ORAEYC) are working together to build collaborative systems & partnerships that help ensure no child falls through the cracks.
Both days will consist of engaging and exciting workshops for Early Learning providers and School Age programs.
The conference will take place at Linn-Benton Community College
Friday April 17th and Saturday April 18th
Saturday Keynote by Dr. Johnny Lake, "Lighting A Spark in Every Child"
Kids Included Together (KIT)
will be hosting workshops all day Friday and Saturday on meaningful engagement for kids with disabilities & inclusive behavior practices.

ther sessions topics will include Summer Program Planning, STEM, Art, Wellness, and Literacy.

Looking for Pilots....Program Pilot Sites that is
Service to Careers
Helping youth dive deeper in their community & amplifying youth voice.
Service to Careers is a ten week, youth voice led curriculum meant for middle school aged youth, developed by OregonASK for out-of-school time programs. Service to Careers uses the Service Learning Framework that goes deeper than the usual Community Service. Clubs choose a health/wellness issue to focus on that affects their community, create a project to address the issue, interview a representative from local Workforce Boards and/or Industry partner to inform the project process, and carry out the service project. This program capitalizes on youth interest and guides them through service learning model while increasing awareness on health careers and resources in their own community. Veteran's Legacies is partnering with OregonASK to pilot the Mighty Endeavor Curriculum throughout Oregon. This pilot is going on now through March of 2020, and you can still join in! Participating programs, libraries, and classrooms will have the opportunity to use the curriculum to guide youth through an interview with a Veteran or Civilian according to the curriculum you choose. That interview will then be archived on the Veteran's Legacies Website for future generations. There will be a short online check-in with OregonASK in February where all participating programs will have a chance to discuss their progress. At the end of the pilot, programs will be sent evaluations for both the youth and facilitators to complete. If you would like to participate in this pilot, please contact

Recognizing & Incorporating National African American History Month
This February, we hope you might be able to take time to celebrate and remember the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society. You can find dozens of lesson plans and resources for educators cultivated by the Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum online. This weeks feature; Folkways Recordings from the Smithsonian providing audio and lesson plans on musical excerpts from history.

Shaping Summer Experiences: Opportunities to Promote Healthy Development and Well-being for Children and Youth
With support from the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
and the
Wallace Foundation
, the
National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine
convened a committee of experts in 2018 to study and prepare a report on the state of the sciences, and how summertime experiences affect school age children across education, health, and safety. Released in late 2019,
the report
put forth a number of recommendations to inform federal, state, local, and organizational decision-makers on developing programs and policies to support the healthy development and learning of all children during the summer months.

Highlights from the Field....
While out on delivery with an Oregon Afterschool Conference door prize,
OregonASK had the pleasure of visiting a well-established program that has been serving the Forest Grove community for nearly a dozen years. The Forest Grove School District has a 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant that funds programming at Tom McCall Elementary school. The program offers 32 clubs like chess/games, yearbook, band, orchestra, dance/hip hop, gaming, soccer, chicos, arts and crafts, astronomy, homework help and more! During the school year, Tom McCall Elementary Extended Day Program serves 482 students!
Melissa Guzman-Rojas, the CLC Program Specialist/ELD outreach at Tom McCall Elementary School CLC, is excited to use the new BEPA kit, which aligns to State standards for Health and Physical activity, to provide fun, age appropriate, hassle-free brain boosts!

The SIA represents close to $500 million in non-competitive grant funds from Student Success Act funding available to all Oregon school districts and eligible charter schools.
