Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland
October 2020
| |
October is my favorite month. "Stubborn optimism" is my new signature phrase.
It stems from the climate movement. I have been on a listening tour recently and am inspired by many stories of perseverance at work. Young parents are juggling telehealth work and family all in the same space. People are working to help our kids, families and community. People are doing more with less. The days are getting shorter and we are thinking about winter, elections, and the next phase of the pandemic. All these influences are combining with the unsettling fear of civil unrest, isolation, and backdrop of discrimination.
My way of coping has been to do all the things: connect safely with others outside or on zoom, get some exercise and be mindful. I invite you to persevere. Providers in Oakland are a collective and hardy bunch. We need to stay connected. Joining forces builds community resilience. We need to do this for ourselves and the kids we serve. So connect. Be well. Mask on. Fortify against flu. Carry on. Vote. We are getting through this time together and the current California COVID dashboard is trending well!

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. Congratulations to this Year’s Nobel Laureates in Chemistry | |
Email from the Chancellor's Office
October 7, 2020
Dear Colleagues,
I am very pleased to share the news that Jennifer Doudna, PhD, Li Ka Shing Chancellor’s Chair in Biomedical and Health Sciences at UC Berkeley, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, senior investigator at the Gladstone Institutes, and adjunct professor of cellular and molecular pharmacology at UCSF, has been named to receive the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Doudna shares the Nobel with her long-time collaborator Emmanuelle Charpentier, PhD, Director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens in Berlin.
Doudna and Charpentier received the prize for their co-development of CRISPR-Cas9, a genome targeting and editing technology that has ushered in a new era of genetics. Their work has transformed the way scientists study genes and their function and has the potential to revolutionize biomedicine.
Inspired by CRISPR’s potential for treating human disease and improving food security through more sustainable agriculture, Doudna spearheaded the creation of the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), a joint UC Berkeley / UCSF venture she leads as executive director.
Doudna oversees a lab at the Gladstone Institutes at Mission Bay and has been an adjunct professor at UCSF since 2016. She collaborates with physicians and scientists here and at the Gladstone to develop CRISPR-based gene therapies for diseases ranging from cancer to HIV to familial vision and movement disorders.

UCSF HRPP - Oakland Panel
We are glad to announce that Jennifer Michlitsch, MD, has agreed to step into the role of IRB Chair for the UCSF HRPP’s Oakland Panel as of September 8, 2020. As a seasoned member of the IRB, clinical practitioner, and researcher, the committee will greatly benefit from Dr. Michlitsch's leadership in this new role.
The outgoing Chair, Lynne Neumayr, MD, has decided to take up a position at a biotech company. We appreciate all of Lynne’s contributions to the Board and the IRB transition project and wish her well in her future endeavors.
A reminder that all new study applications should be submitted to the IRB via iRIS, the UCSF online IRB system. You can access iRIS via MYACESS.
Active studies must be transferred from CYBER to iRIS by February 2021. Details on the transfer process can be found here: https://irb.ucsf.edu/benioff-childrens-hospital-oakland
Until your protocol is transferred to iRIS, all annual reviews, amendments, reports, and closures will continue to be processed in CYBER.
The UCSF HRPP has engaged Brigid Roy (Brigid.Roy@ucsf.edu) as a consultant. Brigid will work with Oakland researchers to facilitate the transition of studies into UCSF’s iRIS system.
In the meantime, if you have queries regarding your application, please utilize the “Ask Andy” online Analyst of the Day request system.
