New Clue As To Why COVID-19 is Usually Mild in Children
One of the biggest mysteries of the new coronavirus is its relative harmlessness in most children who get infected.

At least part of the explanation may be in the cells lining their noses, according to a new study by researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

The researchers started with archived samples of cells from the nasal lining, or epithelium, of people ages 4 to 60. Then they measured the activity of a gene that directs production of ACE2, a protein that helps coronavirus enter the body. It turned out that ACE2 gene "expression"-the DNA instructions that are converted into a functional molecule-was lower in young children, and that expression increased with age.

Isolated Kids in Lockdown May Be at Greater Risk for Depression
[Source:  Psych Central]

A new U.K. study suggests that lonely and socially isolated children are likely to experience high rates of depression and anxiety long after the current lockdown is over and that clinicians need to be prepared for a future spike in demand.'

"From our analysis, it is clear there are strong associations between loneliness and depression in young people, both in the immediate and the longer-term," said Dr. Maria Loades, clinical psychologist from the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath

School Groups Want Flexibility On SpEd Spending Due To COVID-19
[Source; Disability Scoop]

Federal law requires school districts to spend at least as much each year on special education as they did the last, but in light of the pandemic, school leaders want Congress to ease up on this mandate.

Officials with a half-dozen education groups say that the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requirement known as "maintenance of effort" is unreasonable in the current climate. Under the law, there can be financial consequences if school districts do

Chimps Help Trace the Evolution of Human Speech Back to Ancient Ancestors
[Source: Science Daily]

One of the most promising theories for the evolution of human speech has finally received support from chimpanzee communication.

The evolution of speech is one of the longest-standing puzzles of evolution. However, inklings of a possible solution started emerging some years ago when monkey signals involving a quick succession of mouth open-close cycles were shown to exhibit the same pace of human spoken language.

Autism Severity Can Change Significantly in Early Childhood
[Source: Psych Central]

Symptoms of autism can change significantly during early childhood, according to a new study from the University of California (UC) Davis MIND Institute. In fact, the researchers found that nearly 30% of young children have less severe autism symptoms at age 6 than they did at age 3.

Kids' Personality Traits Linked to Motor Skills
[Source: Psych Central]

A new Finnish study shows a link between children's temperaments and their motor skills.
Researchers from the University of Jyväskylä in Finland found that children with active temperaments and attention span persistence tend to have stronger motor skills. This was a rather novel result, as the association between motor skills and temperament during early childhood is not yet widely understood. The team also found that participating in organized sports and being older were positively linked to motor skills.

At Home Summer Fun! DIY Sponge Water Bombs
[Source:  Woo Jr.]

One of the most fun things about summer is all the fun water play ideas out there! One of my favorite things as a kid was playing with water balloons. However, water balloons are disposable, not great for the environment, and are a huge choking hazard for children 3 and under. So instead of water balloons this summer, try making these DIY Sponge Water Bombs! They're reusable, safe for little kids, and don't hurt as much as traditional water balloons. Here's what you'll need to make them!

Whether you are planning a trip this summer or staying close to home, are lots of ways to use maps to develop communication skills.

The age of your child, their interests, and the activities you are planning will help you decide what kinds of maps will work best. For younger children very simple maps with pictures and a few details are best. Older children will enjoy maps with more detail and information.

Pediatric Therapy Corner: Why Free Play Is the Best Summer School
[Source: The Atlantic]

Most schools across the nation have marked the end of another academic year, and it's time for summer. Time for kids to bolt for the schoolhouse doors for two long months of play, to explore their neighborhoods and discover the mysteries, treasures, and dramas they have to offer. This childhood idyll will hold true for some children, but for many kids, the coming of summer signals little more than a seasonal shift from one set of scheduled, adult-supervised lessons and activities to another.

Parent & Teacher Corner:  31 Children's Books to Support Conversation on Racism
[Source: Embrace Race]

Research from Harvard University suggests that children as young as three years old, when exposed to racism and prejudice, tend to embrace and accept it, even though they might not understand the feelings. By age 5, white children are strongly biased towards whiteness. To counter this bias, experts recommend acknowledging and naming race and racism with children as early and as often as possible. Children's books are one of the most effective and practical
