Spending Time in Nature Can Improve Children's Confidence
|

Four out of five children say they feel more confident in themselves after spending time participating in outdoor activities, according to new UCL research.
The study, commissioned by The Wildlife Trusts, examined 451 children across 12 areas of England who took part in outdoor activities such as identifying plants and trees. The participants completed surveys before and after the activities.

Fine Motor Skills as a Predictor of Math Skills

Fine motor skills and math abilities in children have been investigated by researchers to determine their associations with one another. Do fine motor skill abilities effect the development of math skills? Is the development of math skills associated with fine motor skill development?
One study examined the relationship of fine motor skills and math. Fine Motor Precision and Fine Motor Integration, and early reading and math skills were investigated in primary school children.

Nation's Largest Health Insurer Fined Over Autism Claims
|
Pennsylvania officials this week announced a $1 million fine against insurance giant UnitedHealthcare for denial of, or sometimes failure to pay, customers' claims relating to mental health care.
UnitedHealthcare also inaccurately calculated consumers' total out-of-pocket costs for claims relating to autism, according to the state Insurance Department. The company's actions were in violation of the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008, officials said.

For Young People with Psychosis, Early Intervention is Crucial

Andrew Echeguren, 26, had his first psychotic episode when he was 15. He was working as an assistant coach at a summer soccer camp for kids when the lyrics coming out of his iPod suddenly morphed into racist and homophobic slurs, telling him to harm others-and himself.

'Magic Therapy' Program Helps Reduce Pediatric Patient Anxiety

The experience of stress and fears upon hospitalization is frequent with pediatric patients. A new study of pediatric patients at Stony Brook Children's Hospital reveals that a program called MagicAid helps significantly reduce both patient and caregiver (parent) anxiety by about 25 percent. The findings, to be published in Hospital Pediatrics, suggest that a magic therapy program for pediatric inpatient care may have great value to patients and caregivers while hospitalized and should be considered to be implemented in this setting.

Acute Cerebellar Ataxia: Everything You Need to Know

Ataxia means the loss of coordination of body movements. Acute cerebellar ataxia is a disorder in children that causes a sudden loss of coordination.
It is relatively prevalent in children, especially following an infection or serious illness. Most cases resolve without specific treatment.

Looking for a great pediatric 1:1 nursing position? We have a wonderful opportunity for a school nurse/LPN to work a full-time position north of Everett for the 2019-2020 school year, with a possibility to extend for next year as well.
* You will work 1:1 with two medically fragile students and will ride the bus with the students
* School nurse will provide airway management including frequent oral suctioning and occasional unstable airway requiring deep suctioning
* Position requires tube feedings via mickey-button G-tube and a water bolus during their school day
* LPN will work 7.5 to 8 hours per day
* You will report to the Director of Special Education, as do other school nurses within the district

NB: This article is written for the parents of children who have Special Needs Disorders and related problems. We publish it here because we know that therapists like to give their client's caregivers as much information as possible.
The chaos of packing, airport crowds and security, lengthy car rides and yes, even overexposure to family and friends is enough to erode any holiday traveler's festive spirit. Add traveling with children into the equation, especially when special needs are involved, and some parents might wish they could just stay home. But a few preparations, says Fun and Function LLC founder Aviva Weiss, can go a long way toward ensuring a good time for everyone.

Late last year, I found myself in a personal situation for which I hadn't prepared and I couldn't "fix." My son was diagnosed with autism at age 4.

New research over the past 20 years has taught us that core stability is not equal to the strength of stomach or back or hip muscles. Because we now understand that core stability has as much to do with the brain as it has to do with the muscles, we no longer think of it as a strength issue.

Evidence-Based Interventions for Autism

The National Autism Center has released its review and analysis of interventions for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) based on research conducted in the field from 2007 to 2012. The second phase of the National Standards Project (NSP2) provides an update to the summary of empirical intervention literature evaluated by Phase 1 of the National Standards Project (or NSP1) published in 2009. The National Standards Project is the only systematic review of ASD interventions for individuals across the lifespan based on behavioral and educational studies.
