A Message from our Chair
Welcome to Arts Ed Thread, PSAE’s quarterly newsletter. I am incredibly honored to begin my term as chair of this vital organization, but never thought I would do so in the midst of a pandemic that so greatly impacts arts education in schools across our state. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”  In the face of our current challenge, let us grow in creativity and problem solving so we may stand providing learning in and through the arts for all students in our state.

Now more than ever, teachers are stretched thin when it comes to our most valuable resource: time. So PSAE is here to help. Our team is ready to spend our time scouring the field to bring you valuable resources, while you can focus on your day-to-day responsibilities of teaching. So when, each quarter, this newsletter arrives in your inbox, you can rest assured we’ll be bringing you the best in research, tools, and information. Our goal is to offer you inspiration and ideas to make a positive impact on your practice.

Arts Teacher Support Grant
SCAC’s Arts Teacher Support grant is currently open for applications! This grant supports innovation in arts classrooms by providing arts teachers at K-12 public, private, or charter schools access to one-time funding for professional development and/or classroom supplies, materials, and equipment.
Grants up to $1,200 are available for projects/purchases occurring by May 15, 2021. For schools that qualify for Title 1 funds, there is no match requirement! For all other schools there is a 1:2 match (grantee:SCAC), which means that the Commission will cover two-thirds of total expenses. ABC Updates
What a year! On March 5, 2020 ABC Project unveiled its strategic goals for ABC Schools and ABC Network as a result of an 18 month restructuring process. And we haven’t been the same since.

First, a new ABC School Certification program launched. Moving forward, the designation of being an ABC School would be earned through a certification process based on practices, not on a grant application. ABC Certified Schools continue to receive ABC Advancement Grant funds from the SC Arts Commission.
Second, we have redefined the ABC Network as an open community, driven by the belief that all SC students deserve equitable access to quality arts education. To serve this community, ABC Project invested in the creation of the ABC Mobile App! The app is completely free and available for both Apple and Android devices. You can join groups, receive notices and updates on upcoming opportunities, or post comments, questions, etc. Join today and be a part of the community.

To learn more about the ABC Certified Schools program, download the ABC Certified School Guidelines and Application. For assistance to download and use the ABC App, download the ABC Mobile App, visit our website.

ABC Project also partnered with PSAE, SCMEA, SCAEA, SCDA and SCTA to create a one-stop-shop for arts in education professional development through Insight, a collaborative, virtual conference. To date, ABC Project alone has contributed over 20 pieces of content which can be found in PSAE and SCAEA conferences, the SC Arts Higher Education Forum and ABC “on-demand”... with more to come. While you might not have had the time or energy to attend in person, this is a great resource for summer PD!

Finally, our small staff of three wishes to recognize and thank the tireless efforts made by each and everyone in education over the last year. We are grateful for you.

Governor's School offers free arts teacher resources in response to COVID-19
COVID-19 has forced us all to think differently about how we reach students and provide engaging educational experiences while keeping everyone safe. For the Governor’s School’s Office of Outreach, this meant completely pivoting our operations from providing in-classroom workshops, guest artist visits, and field trips to our campus to something virtual, yet tangible, that would still support arts teachers and engage students.
This past fall, we launched a series of free teacher resources that provide virtual and backpack style projects focusing on the four artistic processes—Create, Perform/ Present, Respond, Connect—following the theme “You Have a Story. Learn How to Share It.” Resource activities include creative writing prompts, interviews with professional artists, foundation-level drawing activities, using pantomime in dance, and more.

We appreciate the positive teacher feedback we have received and are committed to continue through the spring semester! If you would like to learn about our current offerings, visit our website at scgsah.org/outreach. To be the first to learn about new resources we will be launching in the coming months, sign up for the Outreach Newsletter.
Do you know an artistically talented student who may be interested in the Governor's School?

While our initial admissions application deadline has passed, we will be accepting applications for our residential high school and summer programs until all spots are filled. Any South Carolina student in grades 6-10 can apply. Our high school program is tuition free, and financial assistance is available for all programs. Students can apply online at SCGSAH.org.

2020 was a year like no other for AASC! But our teaching artists made the pivot to virtual settings and were able to continue satisfying collaborations between educators, and students across the state! We want to start the year as strong as we finished it, providing opportunities for empowerment and enrichment through the arts.
Pieces of Peace collaboration with Borderless Art Tennessee

AASC was invited to participate in a project called Pieces of Peace by our colleagues from Borderless Arts Tennessee (formerly VSA Tennessee).

Borderless Arts TN contracted an artist to create digital art resembling a postcard. The 28 photos represented the 28th anniversary of International Day of People with Disabilities. Borderless Arts sent the finished piece of art to the United Nations, the US State Department and the Kennedy Family.

AASC Master Teaching Artist, Carter Boucher was selected to participate on behalf of the organization. The image submitted is from a mural he completed with students at the SC School for The Deaf and The Blind.

For more information about the project and participants visit, borderlessartstn.org.
ADA30 Countdown

In June 2020, AASC presented a 30 day countdown leading up to the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act. National, Regional and Statewide Partners in the Arts came together to engage in our countdown via video testimonials, related content and historical information to celebrate 30 years of ADA. The countdown took place on the AASC Facebook page and you can go here to review: https://www.facebook.com/artsaccessSC
