DISTINCTIVE SKYSCRAPER COMPLETES IN CAPE TOWN
Construction on the 86-m-tall 35 Lower Long building in the Roggebaai financial and hospitality district in Cape Town, South Africa, recently completed, bringing distinctive new personality to the city skyline, BUSINESSTECH reports. Developed by Abland Property Developers and designed by dhk Architects, the glassy office building features cutaways on its two main corners that "soar upwards, forming a winglike effect." Architonic observes one of the main challenges was balancing multitenant space and space for core components like elevators and stairs. The cutaways, or chamfers, helped achieve that. "At street level, a double-volume entrance connects to shuttle lifts connecting all parking levels and the ground floor to a spectacular arrival experience within the 10th-floor sky lobby, Architonic says. “Thereafter, individuals are transported via a double-volume area and terrace to the office lifts that connect to all the floors above."

ELEVATOR AIR-PURIFICATION SYSTEMS FOR TWIN-CITIES DEVELOPERS
In light of concerns about COVID-19, developers of apartment buildings in the Minneapolis Twin Cities area are incorporating features including elevator air-purification systems into their projects, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Joining features such as wider hallways, larger common areas and high-tech air-purification systems are elevator air-purification systems that kill bacteria and viruses. At the five-story Quentin, under construction in the Minneapolis suburb St. Louis Park, developer Patrick Crowe is incorporating such a system, as well as enlarging cabins to allow for social distancing and adding stainless-steel components that are easier to clean. Such moves can add as much as 10% to product costs, but developers like Crowe believe they will make their projects stand out in a highly competitive residential rental market.

INDIAN COMPANY ORDERED TO PAY FOR STALLED NAIROBI PROJECT
A High Court judge in Africa has ordered Indian firm White Lotus Projects Ltd. to pay the equivalent of nearly US$1.8 million owed to Peri Formwork Scaffolding for breach of contract for building what would have been Africa’s tallest building, Pinnacle Tower, in Nairobi, Kenya (ELENET 720 and 661), Kenyans.co.ke reports. Originally scheduled for completion in 2019, the 300-m-tall skyscraper has been hobbled by delays and court cases. Its foundation has been dug, but complaints emerged about potential environmental hazards to the surrounding area that were, apparently, never resolved. White Lotus settled more than US$500,000 of the original US$2.18-million contract with Peri and did not challenge the High Court’s latest order to pay.
