News & Updates | October 2020
Dear Friend,

I hope this message finds you well.

With our nation and local communities battered by an ongoing public health crisis, a highly contentious election, and so much more, it can be difficult to remain grounded. Let us respond in ways that are inspired and guided by our spirituality, and let us continue to deepen that spirituality through prayer, reflection, and study.

In this newsletter, you will find several opportunities to do so, both online and in-person. Included are two key resources on civic engagement. I encourage you to take advantage of what will most help you navigate these tumultuous times.

On another timely issue, I want to share with you that my colleagues and I at OIS recently read Fr. Bryan Massingale's book "Racial Justice and the Catholic Church." We gathered (online) this past Tuesday for a discussion of the book as part of our ongoing discernment about how our ministry can work toward racial justice in this country. It was a poignant and fruitful conversation, and I strongly recommend reading and reflecting on the book, if you have not yet had the chance.

May the peace of Christ be with you in the coming weeks.

Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. George M. Witt, SJ
Executive Director
Office of Ignatian Spirituality

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP
Saint Ignatius tells us that scrutinizing our desires and feelings is fundamental to discernment, as is education. This year's election season has been particularly contentious. What follows are two key resources from our Catholic bishops and Jesuit leadership to help guide your discernment. May each of us fulfill our civic responsibility to vote, and vote according to a conscience informed by study and prayer.
JESUIT CONFERENCE OF CANADA AND THE USA
Contemplation and Political Action: An Ignatian Guide to Civic Engagement
The Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States invites us to reflect on how our faith and Ignatian values might guide our pursuit of the common good in the public square.

US CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS
Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship
The Unites States Conference of Catholic Bishops periodically updates and re-releases their document "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship."

The bishops write, "This statement represents our guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and duties as participants in our democracy. We urge our pastors, lay and religious faithful, and all people of good will to use this statement to help form their consciences; to teach those entrusted to their care; to contribute to civil and respectful public dialogue; and to shape political choices in the coming election in light of Catholic teaching."

WHAT WE'RE READING
Racial Justice and the Catholic Church
by Rev. Bryan N. Massingale

"Confronting racism is difficult yet essential work to heal the brokenness in our society and our church. This book from 2010 examines the presence of racism in the United States from its early history through the Civil Rights Movement and the election of Barack Obama. It also explores how Catholic social teaching has been used—and not used—to combat racism and promote reconciliation and justice."
