First Trainset on Salt Lake City Test Track - May 2020

May was a landmark month, with the first trainset placed on the special test track at the Salt Lake City manufacturing facility. The track is now powered with 25kv and the train's pantograph--which collects power from the overhead wires--has been raised and connected. Over the coming weeks, the train will undergo high voltage static testing as power is incrementally applied to the trainset while it's stationary on the track. The train will then undergo low-speed acceleration and brake tests. 
All systems, including doors, HVAC, and audio, will undergo functional tests before the first trainset travels to a longer test track in Pueblo, Colorado for higher-speed testing. For more photos of the trainset on its inaugural test track ride, visit

1_000_ Poles Installed

More than 1,000 poles have now been installed along the corridor from South San Francisco to San Jose! Each pole installed will support the wires needed to provide power to the new electric trains. This exciting milestone brings Caltrain one step closer to providing a modernized electric commute.

What Is CalMod?
The Caltrain Modernization Program (CalMod) includes electrification and other projects that will upgrade the performance, efficiency, capacity, safety and reliability of Caltrain's service. The current electrification project will electrify the corridor from San Francisco to San Jose and replace 75 percent of Caltrain's diesel service with high-performance electric trains, reducing air pollution and providing better service to more riders.
