January 2020
Greetings!
Exciting times are here! The First Regular Session of the Seventy-second General Assembly adjourned on May 3, 2019 and the Second Regular Session will convene on January 8, 2020. And Colorado Senior Lobby had their first Legislative Committee Meeting on Monday, January 6th - we are hitting the decks running this year!
At Monday's meeting, Jack B. Regenbogen, Esq., Senior Attorney from Colorado Center on Law & Policy (CCLP) updated us on activities of the Renters Roundtable. John shared two handouts:

  • Prohibit Housing Discrimination Source of Income – CLICK HERE
  • Fairness in Access to Eviction Court Records – CLICK HERE
At Monday's Legislative Committee Meeting we also had legislative liaisons for CSHS and Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) come by to talk to us and they heard from us too. These ongoing meetings are very important to our continued focus on issues and advocacy that promotes legislation beneficial to older Coloradans. With this said here are two important messages:

What has CSL done for older Coloradans?
What has CSL done for older Coloradans – besides reminding our legislators, when they are deep into creating new laws that impact so many Coloradans, that the interests of our older population must be specifically included? And why should you care?

A Capitol Affair is on Jan 27th - Tickets are going fast!
A Capitol Affair on January 27, 2020 will focus on the importance of citizen advocacy and opportunities to put that into practice. After the morning program and a lunch break, participants will spread out through the Capitol to meet with legislators and their staff and sit in on legislative hearings.

Ever Increasing Property Taxes – One Solution
Colorado Senior Lobby receives many emails with requests for information on issues and one of the most common inquiries is how to deal with accelerating property values and rising property taxes. This is a problem that is not going to go away. People inquiring want to know if anything can be done from the legislative side and the answer to that is probably not. Increasing the homestead exemption for any area in Colorado is highly unlikely to ever happen. Our homestead exemption is already one of the most generous in the entire country. The competition for uses of the State’s General Fund is just too intense for this to happen - READ MORE
Supporting the Geriatric Track for NP's & LPN's
We at CSL are excited about the work that started this summer around the idea of encouraging more future health service professionals to take up a geriatric track while in school. A bill is being drafted and will soon be working its way through the legislative process that deals with this subject. Senator Jessie Danielson (D-District 20) is the sponsor and CSL is the lead advocacy group for this particular bill - READ MORE

Have questions about the CSL Legislative Committee Meetings or the Capitol Gang?

While the Colorado legislature is in session, Colorado Senior Lobby (CSL) holds weekly Legislative Committee Meetings (LCM) to review legislation looking for those bills that impact seniors.

From these bills, the LCM group selects those that have the greatest potential impact on older adults for weekly discussion. The result is that the LCM members will either support or oppose proposed legislation depending on its impact on older adults.

Anyone is welcome to attend LCM meetings in person or call in with Zoom, but only current CSL Members can vote on supporting or opposing proposed legislation.

If there is uncertainty about legislation, then the group will monitor the proposed legislation. As the bill proceeds through the process it is frequently amended. This may result in the group changing its position in regard to a particular bill.

The CSL Legislative Committee is always looking for volunteers to help with researching bills and issues for the Legislative Committee Meetings.

We are also looking to expand the Capitol Gang. This group is part of Colorado Senior Lobby (CSL) and it is the group that goes down to the Capitol on most Tuesdays and Thursdays while the Colorado Legislature is in session. If you are really trying to make a difference with issues impacting older adults in Colorado, then the CSL Capitol Gang is the group for you.

Our first Colorado Senior Lobby Legislative Committee Meeting (LCM) of 2020 was on Monday January 6, 2020 at 9:30AM at Disability Law Colorado. Going forward we will be meeting every Monday through May 4, 2020. Occasionally meetings are cancelled due to special events or Federal holidays so always check the website for exact dates.
