Fall 2020 Newsletter
A Message from the Department Chair

Civil and Environmental Engineering Community,

The past year has been uniquely challenging for all of us. I am proud of our faculty and staff for their successful efforts to ensure that our students continue to learn despite the ongoing challenges of this pandemic. Although the transition to more distance learning was rapid, we overcame the challenges together as a community.

I am saddened to announce the passing of our longtime office secretary, Dallas Link, who has been in our CEE family for decades. Dallas was a cornerstone for the CEE department and NJIT community. Our condolences go to her family and many friends.

We would like to welcome our newest faculty member to the department, Dr. William Pennock. You can learn more about William below.

Congratulations are in order for our 2020 CEE Awards recipients! Please see the special section below to learn more about our recipients and their accomplishments. Although we were unable to hold our annual awards ceremony this year, we are planning an event to celebrate these distinguished individuals once the conditions allow us to do so. I would also like to congratulate our faculty, students, and alumni whose accomplishments are highlighted in this newsletter. Finally, congratulations to our May and August 2020 graduates for their accomplishments. We all wish them the best as they move on to the next stages of their careers as CEE ambassadors. This year, we had a record 155 graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree program.

In Remembrance - Dallas Link
We are deeply saddened to announce to the wider CEE community the passing of our longtime office secretary, Dallas Link, on May 21st, 2020.

Dallas joined the CEE Department when we were still using a mimeograph machine to make copies of exams, staining our hands blue and using carbon paper to create file copies of letters. She adapted and adjusted to new technologies and throughout all of the changes, was always kind and compassionate. Through all these years, she was the face of the department, the first person students, faculty and visitors met when they came to CEE. She always presented a positive and friendly welcome. Her memory was impeccable. She remembered birthdays of the faculty and staff as well as those of their family members.

In 2014, Dallas received the Newark College of Engineering's Outstanding Support Staff Award, which "recognizes a member of the NCE staff for exceptional support beyond the required duties."

Dallas will be missed.

Please join us in offering heartfelt condolences to Dallas' family and friends.

CEE Produces Lab Experience Video Series

In response to the challenges posed by COVID-19, the CEE department has produced virtual lab experiences to enable entirely online lab courses for our students. Available below is a preview and series introduction video.

Jeremy Reich, our administrative coordinator and Stephen George, our director of labs for education, collaborated with the instructors for each of CEE's six lab courses to plan, film, and produce a video for each lab experience. In total, 37 lab videos will be provided to CEE students during the Fall 2020 semester.

These videos are being combined with synchronous online classes to create an effective teaching solution for the ongoing pandemic. They will also be made available to students in future semesters to bolster their studies once NJIT returns to normal in-person classes.

The full collection of lab videos are available to anyone with an NJIT ID here. In the meantime, check out our series introduction and preview video by clicking on the image below!

New CEE Faculty Member: William Pennock

The department is proud to welcome our newest faculty member. Dr. William Pennock!
William comes to NJIT from Cornell University, where he completed his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering.
He was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship for his work on improving physical and chemical mechanisms to make water treatment more efficient and resilient by avoiding the use of electricity and moving parts.
During his graduate studies, William worked primarily on a design algorithm and a performance prediction equation to aid the engineering community in the design and operation of hydraulic flocculators, which prepare suspended contaminants and pathogens for removal through later processes like filtration and disinfection. The chief aim of his work is to expand access to municipal drinking water treatment throughout the majority world.
Before joining the department, William was working in India on a Fulbright-Nehru fellowship toward the development, dissemination and adoption of a new village-scale drinking water treatment plant he and his colleagues from Cornell and in India designed.
Dr. Pennock earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering with a minor in Environmental Engineering right here at NJIT, and was an active member of the university’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders.
You can learn more about William via his LinkedIn profile.
Welcome to the team, William!
Prof. Matthew Adams Named 2020 Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellow by The Rockefeller Institute of Government

Congratulations to Professor Matthew Adams for being named a 2020 Richard P. Nathan Public Policy Fellow by The Rockefeller Institute of Government!
According to the Institute's website, "The prestigious fellowship program is named after longtime Rockefeller Institute Director Richard P. Nathan. The fellowship seeks to connect cutting-edge policy expertise to public problems and the policy community that tries to address these problems.” Candidates with expertise in healthcare, local government, fiscal policy, education, law, and social policy are encouraged to apply.
Professor Adams stated that, "We can research and develop new technologies in our labs, but without understanding the barriers that exist in government to implementing them, they will stay in those labs. During this fellowship I will be examining how we can influence policy at the state and local level to increase implementation of sustainable building materials in construction."

Engineers Without Borders Receives Highlander Awards

NJIT's Engineers Without Borders (EWB) chapter has been recognized with two 2020 NJIT Highlander Awards.

The chapter received the Community Service Program of the Year award for their Ecuador service trip.

According to their advisor, Professor Jay Meegoda, 'Roughly 300 families in the community of Grande Maca do not have ready access to water and they travel long distances to obtain it and then carry it back. With our water distribution system they will have running water.'

Dr. Meegoda also received the Highlander Advisor of the Year award. The full awards video is available above.

Congratulations to EWB and Dr. Meegoda!

Student Collaboration Investigates Lithium-Ion
Battery Pollution in NJ

Despite the pandemic, environmental engineering Ph.D. students Qingquan Ma and Fangzhou Liu, along with chemical engineering master’s students Vikas Patchamatla and Alexander Guillen, collaborated over the summer to investigate the pollutants potentially released from commercial lithium-ion batteries in soil, streams, and landfill leachate. Their research is funded by the New Jersey Water Resources Research Institute.

The growing use of lithium-ion batteries in commercial products such as electronics and electric vehicles results in their waste products entering the environment. Suspected pollutants include cobalt (Co); lithium (Li); organic binders such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF); and electrolytes (Lithium hexafluorophosphate or LiPF6).

The team took water and soil samples from multiple sites. These included landfill leachate sites such as Meadowlands landfills and Keegan Landfill facilities. Samples were also taken from the Sparkill Brook, which is near the drainage sewer of a battery manufacturer in Jersey City.

The water samples were taken back to the environmental engineering laboratory at NJIT and analyzed under the supervision of lab director Wen Zhang in order to delineate the concentrations of cobalt, lithium, and fluorine and compare them to environmental baseline levels. The goal was to compare the results to typical environmental baseline levels and to determine if there were changes resulting from increasing use of products that use lithium-ion batteries.
