Faculty iEXCEL Innovation Awards Ceremony

10/15/2020
4:00PM CST

Recognizing faculty and staff who have helped create and implement new ideas for teaching, research and scholarship using simulation technologies and the capabilities of the Davis Global Center.

Congratulations to UNMC and Nebraska Medicine faculty and staff who have been nominated for the inaugural iEXCEL Innovation Awards. Please join us to support your colleagues during this virtual award ceremony. We look forward to recognizing your achievements!
A Davis Global Center "First"!
The design of the Davis Global Center incorporates the total replicated healthcare system – including a simulated home and ambulance bay – “From Home to Hospital and Back!” The concept was to ensure we could simulate the safe transfer of a patient from one facility to another and/or one level of care to the next. Kudos to Nebraska Medicine's neonatal team – LifeNet of the Heartland who created an interprofessional scenario to practice transporting a neonate in critical condition from a Nebraska critical access hospital to Nebraska Medicine.

Student Educational Highlights
Physician Assistant (PA) students from Kearney visited the Davis Global Center and joined with the UNMC PAs for “Introduction to the Operation Room.” They became familiar with surgical instruments, donning and doffing PPE and surgical task trainers. Additionally, Physical Therapy (PT) students practiced the critical skill of transferring a patient between bed and chair.

Graduate Medical Education Highlights
Anesthesiology residents practiced airway insertion and central line placement, and first-year fellows learned pain medicine procedures. Surgical residents conducted a laparoscopy ventral hernia repair as well as sigmoid colectomy. Emergency Medicine residents practiced diagnostic skills supported by the ultrasound trainers; learned to remove an airway blockage from Hal Jr. as well as practiced triaging simultaneous emergencies!

Innovation in Visualization
Recently, the iEXCEL Visualization team launched the trial version of a realistic, pelvic model for use on the Z-Space and 3D CAD Walls. Created in collaboration with the UNMC College of Nursing and Jennifer CeraDNP, APRN-NP, WHNP-BC, this model teaches the anatomy of the female pelvic floor. By interacting and manipulating the models in 3D space, students are able to see different types of anatomical variations at different stages.

iEXCEL Staff Inducted to IAE
In September, three iEXCEL staff members were inducted into the Interprofessional Academy of Educators (IAE). Congratulations to Jenni Bouckhuyt, Surgical Simulation Program Supervisor, Dr. Asit Misra, Simulation Research Scientist, and Samantha Rogers, Clinical Simulation Program Supervisor.
Thank you to our faculty, students, researchers, industry collaborators, the iEXCEL team, our community supporters – and to so many others who are contributing to creating the UNMC Interprofessional, Experiential Center for Enduring Learning.

Please reach out to us directly or through our Gateway App if you have questions about how to access the Davis Global Center and/or receive support in creating your simulation or visualization scenario.

We are here to support you and enjoy growing iEXCEL with you!
