Message from Pastor Tim
Dear Friends and Members of the Ark and Dove Community,

Vacation Bible School under the tent and outside begins this Monday at 6:00 PM. My granddaughter is signed up so I will be hanging out at church this week in the evening and I am open to doing some 30 minute one on one meetings at 6:30 and 7:15 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Just send me an e-mail to lock in a slot.

On Wednesday at 6:30 I will be offering up a one hour, pop up, no homework adult education class entitled Jesus at the Table. We will be discussing Jesus and Communion and also the company he kept at the dinner table. Was his behavior scandalous?  What is this phrase “Table Fellowship” and what does it mean?  Should kids take communion?  How old? Should you skip communion when you have been bad? What do Presbyterians believe about communion?

For many years now Ark and Dove has been supporting PCUSA Mission Co-Worker Rev. Dr. Karla Koll, professor of history, mission and religion at the Latin American Biblical University (UBL), an ecumenical university located in San Jose, Costa Rica. Before that, Karla worked for the PCUSA in Guatemala. Karla has worked career long to train leaders for ministry and to empower women in Central and South America.

I am pleased to report to you that both Karla and her husband Javier have recuperated from COVID and are now fully vaccinated thanks to the Costa Rican Healthcare system.  Thank you for keeping them in your prayers. Javier and Karla have family and friends in Nicaragua, many of whom are refugees fleeing the political oppression in that country.  They have asked us to keep Nicaragua in our prayers.

Several members of our church want us also to keep the people of Haiti and Afghanistan in our prayers as well. Democracy in many ways is a fragile gift, that is one reason Reformed Theology calls Christians to be good stewards of our citizenship. We cannot be passive in the face of injustice and challenges to human rights and the right to vote.

Message from Pastor Jon
Dear Members and Friends of Ark and Dove,

When I think about Vacation Bible School in the past, I think of two things: 1) the wild joy of the first day, when children run into the sanctuary with wonder and excitement; and 2) the interactions between youth and adult leaders and the children who have come to participate.

I anticipate seeing some of that wild joy as children run, not into the sanctuary, but under a tent next Monday through Friday at 6 pm. And I am ready to see leaders develop meaningful relationships with each other and the participating children. During VBS, I get to see so many gifts for teaching and guiding that I have not seen before. That is always so hopeful to see.

Vacation Bible School will be special this year. It will be special because we will get to explore, learn, and play with friends we have not seen for awhile. I think we will appreciate each other's presence more than before. It will also be special because many leaders will be able to reconnect with some of the great gifts God has given for the sake of our children.

I hope that you can take part whether by participating (please register below), inviting a friend to join, or offering a donation (see article below). I know you will be encouraged by what the Church can do.

Peace,
Jon

Verse and Prayer
[Jesus] said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.”
-Mark 6:31
Lead us, in troubled times, to peaceful places. O God, help us, in stressful circumstances, to remain steadfast in mercy and love. Guide us, after busy days, to rest a while. Grant us, in burdened hours, a measure of grace. Call us, from noise and crowd, to a silent and deserted place. In still, small moments, may we find you there. Amen.
Transitioning to hybrid worship has been a joyful, beautiful mess! It's brought about new opportunities and challenges but everything is worth it to have people in the sanctuary and to feel the energy of the congregation in person again. This week, we'll be singing some familiar hymns together and we'll worship with an anthem recorded by the choir last fall - "I Believe", by Mark A. Miller. Mr. Miller's music has worked its way into becoming some of my favorite contemporary anthems by a living, black composer. If you remember it from before, I hope you find new meaning in this piece and if it is new to you, that the experience is a powerful one.

Peace,
Margaret

This week I get to share some long awaited news: the band will now be doing all our music live for indoor worship as well as outdoor worship! I am so excited to be playing music live for worship with the band. Huge thanks to all the hard work that everyone put into the recordings to still allow for wonderful music to be shared during the streaming services. Please remember that the indoor services still require an RSVP, but the outdoor services no longer require one. Besides the occasional prelude/postlude that will be recorded, I look forward to moving back to our original state of worship services.

Have a blessed week!

Stephen Ministry
The Stephen Ministry at Ark and Dove would like to remind you we are here to help. A Stephen Minister provides care, once a week for perhaps a few months to 18 months, to one person who is experiencing a life-changing event like divorce, loss of work, or serious illness or death of a loved one. Supporting each other in times of need is a core belief of our reformed faith and the Ark & Dove community.

Stephen Ministers are not pastors, therapists, social workers, doctors, or nurses. They are friends and caregivers who have received fifty hours of training and have supervision and continuing education. Stephen Ministers are paired with a care receiver after a thoughtful and faith-full process. Confidentiality is a foundation of the ministry. Ten lay people at Ark & Dove have been trained as Stephen Ministers, and two of them received extra training as Stephen Ministry leaders (along with Pastors Tim and Jon).

If you think you or someone would benefit from Stephen Ministry, or if you're just interested in learning more, please contact Stephen Ministry leaders Kelly Burnett (Kellyb327@aol.com, 410-320-7845 cell/text) or Laurie Barrow (barrowfl@aol.com, 443-306-1149 cell/text). A helpful reference is the letter to the congregation from Pastor Tim about starting our Stephen Ministry in 2016. That letter is on the Ark & Dove website under the Ministry tab.

Summer Book Club - July Selection

The Summer Book Club July selection is “When No One is Watching” by critically acclaimed author Alyssa Cole. This novel is described as a gripping psychological thriller in which the gentrification of a Brooklyn neighborhood takes on a sinister new meaning. Join us on Zoom on Tuesday, July 20, 7:30 pm. Contact Kim Champagne (kim.champagne@gmail.com) or Pastor Jon (jnelson@arkanddove.org) if you are interested in joining us!
Mythbusters
Is heaven a gated community of mansions and streets of gold? Will a certain number of people be taken up to heaven in the end times? Did God dictate Scripture to scribes? Is a horned devil responsible for human evil? Join us on Sunday mornings to explore some of these myths of Christianity and bust them! There is no homework or lecture. We will gather at 9:15 am on July 18th, August 1st, August 15th, and August 29th. (Parents, this class will happen at the same time as Summer Sunday School.) Come as you are. Pastor Jon Nelson, jnelson@arkanddove.org
