As we are releasing this issue during the Memorial Day weekend, I do hope it finds you enjoying a pleasant holiday with family and friends. We now only have two days left in this school year and have set out Wednesday, May 27th as a make-up day for anyone that still has items to be dropped off or picked up (below).

In this week's edition you will find a recap of our 8th Grade Day of Excellence. Unfortunately, this year circumstances necessitated an online recognition ceremony and we have shared students' names by category below. These Knights deserve all the accolades and recognition they may receive in that they have worked extremely hard to be on one or more of these lists. Even if you do not have a child in the 8th grade this year, you may enjoy seeing the categories of recognition we have at Lake Nona to recognize excellence.

Below you will also find a request from our PTSA for 2020-2021 board members in that 100% of the PTSA board is turning over this year. PTSA is a vital organization to us as they do so much for both students and teachers. Lake Nona Middle School has among its ongoing strengths a student body that performs academically at very high levels in many areas, a number of the leading educators from across the school district, and a very positive school climate. It is on this last point that our PTSA really helps with student achievement and teacher morale. Please, if you will have a student attending Lake Nona next year consider being part of our PTSA board or at the very least, becoming a PTSA member.

It is our plan to publish a few issues of The Kingdom's Chronicle throughout the summer break, but please remember to visit our school website and social media sites for ongoing news. Have a safe and relaxing Memorial Day and kindly pause for a moment to remember those Americans who laid down their lives for all of us. Thank you.

With Knight Pride,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal
Lake Nona Middle School

On November 1, 2019 LNMS had its first dance of the school year with the theme based on the horror web show "Stranger Things" set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in November 1983. This is a great example of the types of initiatives our PTSA offers for students. For this event, the PTSA created an atmosphere with haunted houses, lots of food and a popular DJ. The students all looked forward to it and as you can see, had a great time. Please consider joining our PTSA board next year.

Monday's Motivational Moment!
Failure . . . A Road to Success!

César's ancestors were goat herders, and his father was a goat herder. In their tiny Swiss village there were fewer than two hundred people. His mother and father disagreed over his future. His mother had great ambitions for her son, while his father felt he should stay on the farm and tend the animals. César's mother won! At the age of 12 he was sent to school in Sion, Switzerland to study French and mathematics. But at the end of two years, he had learned little of either . . . you see, all he wanted was to do is tend goats! Both parents then began to worry and even his father thought he should do something more ambitious. His father then wrote a friend in a nearby town and actually paid the friend to hire young César as a waiter in his hotel.

The boy was eager to learn about the lodging industry and tried his best, but the more he tried, the more nervous he became. His mistakes and poor service to the hotel customers increased to such a level that the hotel manager had no choice but to fire him. He told the teenager, "You are not cut out for this type of work. Go back to your village and tend goats; that's what you were meant to do."

Unable to face his parents, César left Switzerland to seek his fortune in Paris at the time of the 1867 Universal Exhibition and was employed by several restaurants and hotels, working his way up from waiter to manager. By the time he turned 19, he was known for being an exceptional server, fast on his feet and attentive to his guests. What happened in the years that followed is what dreams are made of! In fact, his last name is now in the dictionary! It is defined by Webster's dictionary as "elegance." And the boy's last name? Ritz. César Ritz, founder of the great hotel chain that has come to symbolize the best in service and luxury.

The lesson for our Knights? There are few persons that have not faced setbacks and difficulties. Many have started life with disadvantages, whether physical handicaps or economic barriers. But if there is one defining trait in the universe that has lifted the most common of people to success it is persistence. And that is a personal decision we can all choose to make!

Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!
