At the live, in-person 2022 Commencement ceremony to be held on May 26 at Alice Tully Hall, the keynote address will be delivered by U.S. Representative Brad Wenstrup, DPM, FACFAS, who will receive the degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa. Dr. Wenstrup graduated from Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago in 1985, completed his residency at Thorek Hospital in Chicago, and maintained a private practice in Cincinnati. President Louis L. Levine Honored with
PM Lifetime Achievement Award  

Louis L. Levine, President and CEO of NYCPM and FCNY, has been elected to receive the 2022 PM Lifetime Achievement Award and will be inducted into the PM Podiatry Hall of Fame later this year.
_The full biography and related materials for Mr. Levine are in the March issue of Podiatry Management Magazine; he is the 16th non-podiatrist to be induced into the PM Hall of Fame. Mr. Levine has been president of NYCPM since 1991, and has guided the college in diverse ways, including: making major physical changes to NYCPM’s building as well as serious advances in the college’s academics; instituted externships for fourth-year students, residency programs at the college and the White Coat ceremony for first years; and vastly improved hospital affiliations and ... TC&US Announces its New Status as Touro University;
NYCPM To Join Touro’s Family of Health-Related Institutions

With a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal on March 1, 2022, Touro College announced that it is now Touro University. The New York State Board of Regents has voted to amend Touro College and University System’s charter to change its designation. “We are proud to join one of the country’s premier universities. NYCPM fits perfectly into Touro’s academic mission,” noted Joel Sturm, NYCPM’s Chief Operating Officer.
_In the ad, Touro University announced that it “looks forward to proudly welcoming” four academic institutions, including NYCPM, to its expanding universe. NYCPM will join with other prominent institutions in New Mexico, Montana and Illinois. Touro currently has 35 undergraduate colleges, including a number of health-related schools, including New York Medical College, and colleges of osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine and health sciences.
Karan Sharma (2024) Voted President-Elect of APMSA
 
NYCPM student Karan Sharma (2024) was voted President-Elect of APMSA at the recent mid-winter House of Delegates meeting in Nashville. He will serve one year as President-Elect, and then serve as President the following year. Previously an APMSA Alternate Delegate for his class, Mr. Sharma as President will sit on the APMSA Executive committee, APMSA Board of Trustees, Strategic Planning committee and run the APMSA house of delegates meeting. Andrei Jicman Named ACFAS Region Scholar

The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons has announced its nine 2022 ACFAS Region Scholars, and NYCPM’s Andrei Jicman (2023) has been selected as the Northeast Region Scholar. Student Scholars each earned a scholarship from their respective ACFAS Region in recognition of their strength as a podiatric medical student, future promise as a foot and ankle surgeon, and appreciation for their leadership of their local ACFAS Student Club on their school’s campus. Funds are used to support their travel to the ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference on an annual basis. Source: PM News

Alex Fleischman attended Wound Week 22, the American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA) Wound Week 2022. Here is his report:

The conference is the national meeting of the APWCA. The meeting occurred in Philadelphia, PA, February 24 and 25. All medical professionals certified in wound care were in attendance. This included MD, DO, DPM, Nurses, and PT. The goals of the conference are to explore and discuss the modern innovations in wound healing. Topics include diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, new wound care products, innovative wound analysis, and vascular intervention. The conference included lectures, wound care company exhibits, hands-on workshops of new wound care management ... Loretta Logan, DPM, MPH, Professor and Chairman, Department of Orthopedics & Pediatrics, forwarded an email from Jasmine J. Christie Reid, B.S. NYCPM Sports Medicine Club Is On the Move --
Visits Compounding Pharmacy ...


In late January the Sports Medicine Club E-board toured Mega Aid Pharmacy, the largest compound facility in New York State. (photo above) Wearing full personal protective equipment, the team toured the sterile, state-of-the-art compound facility. During the tour they discussed different types of pain receptors and how to block them using compounding medications. Unfortunately, said member Will Stallings, athletes are taught to train through some levels of manageable pain. Club members felt it was important to learn about the pain management products that they would be prescribing to their patients. he said.

... and Cadaver Lab

On March 8, Samuel Adegboyega, DPM (2006), Chair, Department of Podiatric Medicine, and members of the Sports Medicine Club had the opportunity to go to the Arthrex cadaver lab and receive hands-on training on various techniques to fix ankle fractures. Club president Will Stallings stated that the training experience was extremely helpful and “has certainly allowed students to feel more confident in their surgery skills.”

Trustee Recognized for Her Philanthropy
Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY has recognized NYCPM Trustee Kathy Reilly-Fallon, DPM (1994), a busy healthcare provider, for her dedication to philanthropy, as part of the college’s celebration of Women’s History Month. In addition to a generous donation to support Ukraine, Dr. Fallon and board members of her Heavenly Productions Foundation will donate hand-stuffed teddy bears to pediatric cancer patients at Ohmatdit, the largest children’s hospital in Ukraine, as well as donate funds directly to the hospital. Source: PM News
Foot Ball Returns! Glittery Gala is Welcome Sign of Spring
Foot Ball returned on March 5 at Pier Sixty in Manhattan. The gala included an open bar, a cocktail hour with hors d'oeuvres, an awards ceremony and a three-course seated dinner. The glittering affair gave students a chance to dress up and step out with friends, a few faculty and staff and have a good time in a lovely setting.

2023 Students Attend and Assist at Amputation at Metropolitan
On Saturday March 12, Daniel Yaeger, DPM (2018) Instructor, Department of Surgical Sciences, was scheduled to perform an emergency amputation at midnight at Metropolitan Hospital. The surgery was a partial amputation of the first ray. Dr. Yaeger performed the surgery, assisted by resident Nicholas Banerjee, DPM (2020). At the last minute four third-year students volunteered to travel to Metropolitan and watch the surgery; two students scrubbed in and assisted. “The surgery was successful and provided an excellent educational experience,” said Megan Mitchell (2023).

Lower Stress and Increase Mindfulness with Meditation Wednesdays
According to Medical Librarian Lorraine Chun MLIS, Meditation Wednesdays started in August 2021, based on discussions with the Student Wellness Committee. Student Wellness was identified as part of the NYCPM's Strategic Plan to develop and implement student wellness initiatives for students' mental and physical well-being. NYCPM Board Treasurer Peter J. Norton Dies

Peter J. Norton, BA, LHD, Treasurer of the NYCPM Board of Trustees, passed away on March 14. A member of the board since March 19, 2010, Mr. Norton had a long career as an insurance executive and board member prior to joining NYCPM. Gabriel Caprio, Chairman of the NYCPM Board, said “The Board wishes to extend their sincerest condolences to the family of Peter Norton. Peter was an integral part of the college and was a driving force behind the affiliation with Touro University.” Louis L. Levine, President & CEO of NYCPM, remembered that “Peter’s expertise in insurance and business was a gift to the college, as he used his business acumen for those tough financial decisions.” Joel Sturm, COO, stated that “Peter was more than a board member and treasurer, he was also a friend who could be counted on to help anyone with any problem.”
Josef Michl, MD, 1939 - 2022

On the afternoon of March 21st 2022, NYCPM received the sad and shocking news that our esteemed former professor of immunology, Josef Michl, MD, had passed away. Dr. Michl had recently retired to spend quality time with his family and grandchildren.
_Eileen Chusid, PhD, Associate Professor and Dean of Pre-Clinical Sciences and Director of Institutional Research, remembered Dr. Michl as "a brilliant researcher and an inspiring teacher to NYCPM students as well as to medical students and post-doctoral students at Downstate.
_NYCPM students will always remember Dunkin’ Donuts after exams and the administrators his wonderful end-of-semester luncheons. Dr. Michl was a renaissance man in the true sense of the word. The pre-clinical science faculty members will long remember and sorely miss wonderful conversations not only about immunology and medical education but also about art, music, travel, history and so much more."
_Said Academic Dean Michael J. Trepal, DPM, “Those who knew Dr. Michl can attest that he was an extraordinary physician and scientist, a fabulous professor who cared about his students, and above all, a truly remarkable human being. He will be greatly missed and leaves a long legacy of accomplishment that has influenced many generations of physicians here and at Downstate.”
_Dr. Chusid adds, “It was a privilege to know and work with Josef Michl. May he rest in peace.”
