A novel base editing technology invented at Rutgers University with the potential to be used for the creation of new cell and gene therapies will be made available to researchers worldwide through an exclusive partnership with the Horizon Discovery Group.
The technology invented by Shengkan 'Victor' Jin, associate professor of pharmacology, and co-inventor Juan C. Collantes, post-doctoral research fellow, at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School can be potentially used for developing cell therapies for sickle cell anemia and beta thalassemia, HIV resistant cells for AIDS, off-the-shelf CAR-T cells for cancer, and MHC-compatible allogenic stem cells for transplantation. It could also be used as gene therapies for inherited genetic diseases such as antitrypsin deficiency and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
"The gene editing technology developed by our researchers has the potential to revolutionize how scientists think about their search for better options and outcomes in the treatment of disease worldwide," said S. David Kimball, PhD, Senior Vice President for Research and Economic Development at Rutgers.

ORED will be hosting an information session for the 12th application cycle of the QED Proof-of-Concept Program. QED provides $200,000 in funding, which includes institutional match, for researchers developing life sciences/healthcare technologies. The scope of work must have commercialization goals. In addition to the funding, finalists will receive mentoring from business leaders, commercialization experts, and regulatory specialists.
QED is sponsored by the Philadelphia-based University City Science Center, a nonprofit institution dedicated to identifying and nurturing promising life sciences technologies.

on Tuesday, February 18 at 11 am.

S.P.A.C.E. Graduation and New Courses
Congrats to all graduates from ORED's Sponsored Programs Academy for Continuing Education (S.P.A.C.E.). A total of 68 graduates completed fundamentals and advanced courses over the lasts months.
On January 24, José Román, vice president for research administration, welcomed a new class of
S.P.A.C.E. participants for the Spring 2020 semester. The program offers comprehensive training to ensure that members of the Rutgers research community have a solid understanding of the university's processes and the various stages of a sponsored program's lifecycle, including pre- and post-award management, compliance, risk management, intellectual property, and much more.

RESOURCES FOR RESEARCHERS
|
The Rutgers University Molecular Imaging Center (RUMIC) is offering tours throughout the months of March and April 2020.
Each tour consists of a brief presentation, providing an overview of the use and capabilities of the Center, followed by a short demo for each imaging system. Examples of image processing and data analysis will be presented and the application of imaging technology to research will be discussed.
Located on the Livingston Campus in Piscataway, RUMIC provides researchers from Rutgers and the surrounding academic community, as well as scientists from local biotech, pharmaceutical and consumer products industries with non-invasive approaches to study various biological and disease models in small animals, biological specimens, ex vivo tissues, biomaterials or physical objects. The comprehensive imaging modalities maintained at the Center include: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI); PET/CT; nano & microCT; Optical/X-ray Imaging and; High-resolution Ultrasound technologies. seek programs that will make a lasting impact on New Jersey communities. PBF seeks to build relationships with organizations that have the capacity and drive to create change and enhance quality of life through one of three Funding Priority Areas: Community Enrichment, Education, and Health, Youth & Families. The focus points this year are: (1) programs that address obstacles to workforce development; (2) programs that expand access to and quality of academic opportunities; and (3) programs to address chronic problems that impact quality of life.

The Department of Defense released its fiscal year 2020 National Defense Education Program (NDEP) funding opportunity for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education, outreach, and workforce initiative programs. The funding opportunity encourages projects that improve the capacity of education systems and
 communities to create impactful STEM educational experiences for students and teachers and prepare the 21st century technical workforce. Proposed programs should align with the most recent federal STEM strategy, which calls for DOD to make significant investments in science and technology modernization priority areas to meet key capability and capacity needs and further cultivate our nation's STEM talent pool.
