Meet Abraham Lincoln this week!
Hello, library friends --

It's been great seeing you at the library recently! Things have really picked up around here in the last couple of weeks, as they have throughout Mercer. We've been enjoying seeing you!

This is a full week for us. Tomorrow night, Tues 7/13 at 9:00 p.m., is Outdoor Movie Night, where we'll show the family classic, Babe. On Wednesday, meet Abraham Lincoln as portrayed by professional Lincoln presenter Kevin Wood and learn about our nation's history during the turbulent years of Lincoln's life. Thursday morning is story hour at 10:30 a.m., where we'll read some animal stories and do a simple craft.

I hope you'll make time in your week to join us at some of these events. See you soon!

Abraham Lincoln: A New Birth of Freedom

Hear a first-hand account from Abraham Lincoln himself of the history of the United States of America from his childhood on the frontier to the twelve turbulent years from 1854 to 1865, which nearly destroyed our young nation but instead eventually resulted in a “new birth of freedom.” Kevin Wood is a professional Lincoln presenter who has done over 1,300 programs in 31 states and three countries.

Everyone ages 10 and older will enjoy this 60-minute program, followed by time for questions and photographs with the "Great Emancipator."

This free performance will be held Wednesday, July 14 at 1:00 p.m. outdoors on the library grounds. Please bring your own chair or blanket to sit on if possible. (Metal folding chairs will also be available.) In case of inclement weather, the event may be moved indoors to the Mercer Community Center.
Summer Reading Programs for ages 0-109

Everyone is welcome to join in our summer reading programs again this year!

Kids ages 0-15 are invited to participate in our Kids Summer Reading Program, where you can earn some fun rewards including a free t-shirt from the Wampum Shop for reaching your reading goal! Just read an average of 10-15 minutes per day this summer.

Teens and adults ages 16-109 aren't left out of the fun, either. Sign up for our reading challenge and read 8 books this summer to earn a Mercer Public Library insulated tumbler!

You can record your reading for either program using the Beanstack app (iOS | Android), or visit the library to pick up a paper reading log.

Learn more about the Kids Summer Reading Program or the Teens & Adult Summer Reading Program on our website.

Happy reading!
Outdoor Movies @ Your Library

Join us for some family-friendly movies on the lawn twice a month this summer. We’ll provide popcorn and water, you bring a chair or blanket to sit on and plenty of bug spray.

  • Tuesday, July 13: Babe, 1995, rated G
  • Monday, July 19: Instant Family, 2018, rated PG-13
  • Tuesday, August 10: Cool Runnings, 1993, rated PG
  • Monday, August 23: The Peanut Butter Falcon, 2019, rated PG-13

July movies will start at about 9:00 p.m. depending on the light conditions. (Please note the later start time!)

In case of bad weather, the event will be cancelled. (Bad weather includes rain or thunder, excessively cold temperatures, or enough wind to cause problems with our inflatable screen.)
Friends of the Library raffle

It's the last week to get your tickets for the Vision Grills Kamodo charcoal grill raffle. You’ll be grilling in style this summer in this ceramic-construction grill, donated to us by a generous library patron. The winner will be drawn on July 16.

Don't forget about the American Girl doll raffle, too. This year we have a "Tenney" doll along with accessories that will have you singing around the campfire, donated by a generous library patron. The winner will be drawn on September 8.

Tickets for each raffle are $5 each or 6 for $20. All proceeds support the Friends of the Mercer Library, who fund library programs and special projects throughout the year.
Kids events

Weekly kids programming will be held on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., July 1 through August 12. Special events include:
  • Tie-dye on July 22 (rain date 7/26): We'll provide a limited number of t-shirts for dying. You may bring a 100% natural fiber (cotton, bamboo, silk, etc.) item to dye if you wish.
  • Colossal Fossils with “Whale of a Tale” on July 29: See some of the extremely gargantuan bones from the largest animals that ever lived: whales. You’ll meet modern animals like the humpback whale, their dolphin cousins, orcas, and their ancient ancestors, Basilosaurus and Zygorhiza. There will be plenty of “oohs” and “aahs” as we examine some of these massive fossils!
Library COVID policies

Following the latest recommendations from the CDC, the library requires that all visitors ages 5 and older wear masks inside the building if they are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Library visitors who are vaccinated may make their own decisions about wearing masks. We ask that you respect others and maintain social distancing when practical.

Curbside service is still available to anyone who requests it for any reason. Just call us at 715-476-2366 to let us know what you need, and we'll be happy to help.
