A Covid Thanksgiving - When Would I Need to Quarantine?

As the holidays approach but Covid numbers continue to rise in our area and across the country, we wanted to address some ways to keep the holidays safe.

The most important way to keep your holidays safe and our families healthy is to limit possible exposure to the virus now.

According to CDC guidelines, anyone who is exposed to someone with covid (which includes the 2 days before their symptoms start or 2 days before their positive test) must quarantine for 2 weeks after their exposure. This 2 week quarantine period (which means no school/daycare, sports, work, friends, or family gatherings) is required even if you have a negative covid test during that period. This is necessary since patients can develop symptoms (and go from a negative to a positive test) on any of the days during that 2 week period.

For Thanksgiving, that 2 weeks starts today.

If your family is planning even a small, outdoor, socially-distanced gathering for the holiday, everyone planning to attend should consider limiting their visits with others as of today. That may include limiting sports practices, not hanging out with friends even outdoors, and not dining out of the house. It should always include maintaining social distance and wearing a mask, and high risk activities (like seeing friends indoors or in cars without masks) should be avoided altogether.

Even with these early precautions, protecting the most vulnerable during our Thanksgiving celebrations is important.

Consider seating family members who do not live together at separate outdoor tables. Always wear masks when not eating, and avoid passing food platters from person to person.

Together we can ensure a healthy holiday season and happy new year.

Sincerely,

The Physicians of PNP
