Color and floral trends for 2020 indicate that green, silver and white will be en vogue this year. This session, Color Isn't Everything! will explore “non-color” options for your garden, building simplicity and style for maximum effect.
Jacqueline is currently the OSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator for Summit County. She works primarily with small farm systems, community gardens and Master Gardeners. She advises on production issues, plant pests and diseases, and other consumer horticulture matters. She is a true believer in small-scale agriculture and feels very fortunate to be in Akron, a place where urban agriculture is considered part of the re-design of the City.
We all have heard about how bees and wind pollinate flowers, but the whole story is so much bigger. In Phyllis Mihalik's presentation, Sex in the Garden, learn how the birds and insects really pair up and the active role the flowers play. Yes, flowers are not passive bystanders in all this! Think about the shape of the flower versus the shape of the pollinator; it all matters. You’ll never look at a flower the same way again!
A gardener her entire life, Phyllis became a Master Gardener Volunteer with The Ohio State University in 2004. She currently owns PM Consulting where she designs landscapes, pollinator and rain gardens for homeowners, landscapers and nurseries that succeed in northeast Ohio’s challenging weather and soils. In 2016, she initiated an ongoing project creating a monarch way station along with the Geauga Master Gardeners at the Lake County Waste Management reclaimed landfill, planting over 1000 Milkweed seedlings. Phyllis is an active presenter, teacher and judge for horticultural events.
In From Garden to Bottle: Plants of the Perfume Industry, Deyampert Giles (Amp) will help us explore the vast array of plants used in the perfume industry (with a particular emphasis on what is locally available). Participants will also learn techniques to help sharpen their sense of smell along with a basic vocabulary of fragrance.
Deyampert Giles is a horticulturist at the Cleveland Botanical Garden. He is responsible for the Mary Ann Sears-Swetland Rose Garden, White Oak Walk, The Paula & David Swetland Topiary Garden, the Theme Gardens (includes the Butterfly Garden and Kitchen Garden) and has horticulture responsibilities for the Hershey Children’s Garden. Prior to earning a Plant Science degree at Cuyahoga Community College, Deyampert served in the United States Air Force and studied history and French at the University of Maryland in Mannheim, Germany. After his military service Deyampert spent the next 11 years between Germany and Australia working in the music industry.
Are our landscapes and landscapes designs as sustainable as we believe they are? With two decades in the landscape and tree industries, John Palmer has seen more avoidable mistakes than he would like to admit; poor materials, workmanship, knowledge, and placement, leading to poor results. Most of these mistakes were avoidable. In his presentation Deforestation by Design™, John will share information to help us be truly committed to being sustainable, reaping the benefits of trees and plants, rather than unnecessarily shortening the lifespan of our landscape plantings with poor practices.
John Palmer is an Arborist and Owner of PlanetCare Landscape. He's an author, speaker, and trainer on trees in urban and construction environments, soil deficiencies and appropriate soils for healthy trees, increasing urban tree canopies by ensuring trees live to maturity, and unsustainable landscape designs. John is certified by the International Society of Arboriculture as an advanced tree risk assessor and has nearly two decades of landscape experience.
Dan Hermes' topic for us is Climate Change, Forests, and Arboriculture: As Earth Warms, Trees Feel the Heat. Earth has warmed sharply in recent years with impacts on tree growth and physiology, species range, pest pressure, and plant health care practices that are readily apparent. Dan’s presentation will explore the implications of ongoing climate change for arboriculture and urban forestry, as well as the potential for urban forests to mitigate climate change.
Dan Hermes is Vice President of Research and Development for The Davey Tree Expert Company. Prior to joining Davey, Hermes served on the faculty in the Department of Entomology at The Ohio State University from 1997-2017, including department chair from 2012-2016. His research and outreach programs focus on the ecology and management of trees in forests, urban forests, and ornamental landscapes, including interactions with insects, soils, and climate.
Jamey Emmert's presentation is titled Where Would We Be Without Birds? Just 100 years ago we were on the verge of losing dozens of North American bird species which are now common today, including snowy egrets, great blue herons, and Eastern bluebirds. It was already far too late for some species like the passenger pigeon. The beginning of the proverb, “It Takes a Village,” rings true; when a collection of like-minded people work together for a common cause, they can change the world. Conservationists boldly took a stand and literally saved the lives of billions of birds. Jamey will enlighten us on the importance of birds around the world and our dependence on these wonderful creatures.
Jamey Emmert, a native of Lancaster, Ohio, located on the edge of the Appalachians in Fairfield County, serves as a Wildlife Communications Specialist for the Division of Wildlife’s Northeast Ohio district, where she conducts hunting, fishing and wildlife watching workshops, creates educational displays, and partners with educators to teach our youth about conservation and our natural resources. In her spare time, she enjoys hunting, fishing and searching for ancient artifacts in Ohio’s fields.
Weather and climate greatly impact gardening and pest management in Ohio. In his presentation, Weather and Climate Impacts on Gardening in Ohio, Aaron will help us explore differences between weather and climate, highlighting the key climate characteristics that are important for northeast Ohio's growing environment. He will also help us understand effects of greenhouse gases, the change in Ohio’s climate in recent decades and what we might see in the future. Specific impacts on horticulture and soils will be discussed as well as how to build resilience to these changes in our gardens.
Aaron B. Wilson is an Atmospheric Scientist at The Ohio State University, holding a joint appointment as a Senior Research Associate at the Byrd Polar & Climate Research Center and Climate Specialist with OSU Extension. His expertise includes weather, applied climatology and climate change. Aaron is passionate about educational outreach.
Jim Chatfield will incorporate his wit and wisdom as he inspires us to have Fun with Plant Families! He is sure to provide us with inspiration as we peruse our catalogs this winter.
Jim is a frequent presenter of “all things green” in the United States, but especially in Ohio and the Midwest. He is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist with The Ohio State University. His lively presentations highlight plant problem diagnostics, plant materials, plant selection, and plant pathology.
