A New Year's Message From Our President
I want to wish all our readers a very Happy New Year. I hope that together in 2020, we New Trier Democrats can make a difference in the important national, state and local elections. Now more than ever we must stand together for decency, honesty and compassion.

There will be many opportunities for you to participate and you will find that when you put skin in the game, the feeling when you win is overpowering and so rewarding. I will give you an example: this summer I worked with Sister District to send post cards to help turn the Virginia House of Delegates Blue...We did it...Such fun meeting new people, so easy just writing postcards, and the results were so important. Now Virginia could finally get the ERA amendment passed.

Our newsletter, website and facebook page will keep you informed of many chances to participate in voter registration. Fighting voter suppression by identifying our voters and turning out the vote both in Illinois and across the border in Wisconsin will be crucial. Wisconsin is being identified as winnable and we can use those electoral votes. In our events listing below, there are opportunities to become a deputy voter registrar in Illinois or help get out the vote in Wisconsin by phone banking, writing postcards, or canvassing to make sure voters get their proper Wisconsin voter identification.

Our first event in 2020 is our Endorsement Meeting on Sunday, January 26th at Winnetka Community House - see below for further details. I urge all of you to join us to help support our candidates in 2020. Also, if you live in New Trier Township and are a NTD member, you are entitled to vote at the meeting and to speak for a particular candidate.

We have many events planned and we will be handing out palm cards listing our 2020 events.

I look forward to this year and its challenges. Hopefully, if we all work together and join hands and hearts for a better country for ourselves and our children we will attain this goal.

Your membership keeps the New Trier Democrats running and supports our ongoing grassroots efforts. All of the funds we collect are used only for political races and events supporting our candidates and causes we believe are important to our community. 
We ask that our members renew their dues at the start of each calendar year rather than based on random 12 month periods. No more "rolling dues." We are doing this to make it easier for our members to remember when to update their membership. 

Membership dues are $50/year, but we have special discounted rates for seniors, under 35 and couples.

New Trier Democrats' Endorsement Meeting
Sunday, January 26th from 1:30pm to 5:00pm
Your Vote Determines Who We Endorse in the 2020 Primary

New Trier Democrats will be voting on candidates to endorse and support – as an organization – for the upcoming 2020 Democratic Primary. This meeting is your opportunity to have a say in local, state and national politics. Our endorsement meetings are always spirited, and we expect this meeting will be no different given the number of candidates running for office. 

We will be hearing presentations from candidates (or their chosen representatives) in the following contested races: U.S. President, Cook County State’s Attorney, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, IL Supreme Court and IL Appellate Court . 

To be eligible to vote in New Trier Dems’ Endorsement Meeting, you must be: (1) a member – so you must be paid up on your membership dues; (2) a resident of New Trier Township; and (3) at least 18 years of age on the date of the March 17, 2020 Primary.
Dues also may be paid by mailing your check to New Trier Democrats at 800 Oak St., Suite 112, Winnetka, IL 60093

This Friday, January 3, 2020: Students Pete Up Evanston

When : Friday, January 3, 2020 from 10:00am to 11:00am
Where : Curt’s Café, 2922 Central St, Evanston
What : Pete For America is hosting a Pete Up for students under the age of 18 who are interested in Mayor Pete but are not able to vote yet! They will talk about ways to get involved with the campaign as a nonvoter, and also have some fun trivia! Tuesday, January 7, 2020: Indivisible Evanston’s Phone Bank & Letter Write to Flip Wisconsin

When : Tuesday, January 7, 2020 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm
Where : 319 Wesley Ave, Evanston

Wednesday, January 8, 2020: Deputy Voter Registrar Training With Tenth Dems

When:  Wednesday, January 8, 2020 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm
Where : Northbrook Public Library, Civic Room, 1201 Cedar Lane, Northbrook
What :  A training for Deputy Voter Registrars.  Participants must be Cook County residents at least 18 years of age and registered to vote in the County.   Deputy Registrars must be trained in the county in which they live, but once trained they can register new voters anywhere in the state of Illinois. This training is being held through the County Clerk’s office  and is free of charge. Sign-ups will be taken up to five hours before the class starts. Late sign-ups may or may not be added to the class. Thursday, January 9, 2020: State Rep. Gabel’s Chief of Staff Available for Assistance

When : Thursday, January 9, 2020 from 10:30am to 12:00noon
Where : New Trier Township Hall, 739 Elm St., Winnetka
What : Rep. Robyn Gabel’s Chief of Staff, Karen McCormick, will be available to answer questions about State of Illinois services. Township residents and neighbors are encouraged to drop by during the scheduled office hours.
Saturday, January 11, 2020: Wisconsin Voter I.D. Canvass in Kenosha

When : Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 11:00am to 2:30pm (arrive in Kenosha by 11:00am for training; 11:30 head out to canvass; leave Kenosha around 2:30pm)
Where : Kenosha Democratic Party office, 5712 7th St, Kenosha
What : Join fellow north suburban Democrats as they canvass in Kenosha, Wisconsin to identify new potential Democratic voters and make sure they have proper identification to vote in 2020. All predictive lists concur that Wisconsin, with just 10 electoral votes, could easily be the state that determines the 2020 presidential winner. When : Saturday, January 18, 2020 starting at 11:00am
Where : Grant Park, Chicago
What : From the organizers: “With so much at stake, 2020 is going to be a BIG year, and together we must #MakeItCount! Come out and make your voices heard on the issues that matter to you most! Please bring your hand made signs – you’re all so creative!!! Women’s Rights. Racial Justice. LGBTQ+ Rights. Equal Pay. Health Care. Immigrant Rights. Women’s Reproductive Rights. Violence-Free Communities. Voting Rights. Impeachment. Mass Incarceration. Social Justice. Climate Change. Gun Violence Prevention. Disability Rights. Census 2020. Bring your friends, family members, voices and signs, as we march through the streets of downtown, and let the world know that Chicago is at the forefront of change!

Because of Chicago’s often blisteringly cold winter weather, the January March will see marchers on the move rather than following a traditional long-form rally format. WMC will work with the city to design a route from Grant Park to Federal Plaza that will feature entertainment, educational elements and other surprises as marchers wind their way through downtown streets. WMC and its partner organizations will also use the event as an opportunity to spread the word about the 2020 Census, which gets underway in the spring.” For more information, visit  their website  or  their Facebook event page .
Sunday, January 19, 2020: Screening & Discussion of “Reversing Roe”

Where : Glenview Public Library, 1930 Glenview Road, Glenview
What : The film, a Netflix original documentary, lifts the lid on a decades-long political campaign to overturn Roe v. Wade. The screening and discussion is co-sponsored by the North/Northwest Suburban Illinois chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and Men 4 Choice. It is not a library-sponsored event. New Trier Democrats memberships are on a calendar year basis. We encourage our members to renew their dues annually every January.
