The Sherlock sign is installed!
An intrepid crew of volunteers and celebrants were at the Castle on April 2 to put the finishing touches on the installation of the iconic Sherlock sign.

Lauren Schillawski, who was a high school student at Lyme-Old Lyme High School when she crafted the sign itself, came to Connecticut from Skaneateles New York to participate in the installation.

We made good use of the raising-lowering mechanism. It took only three tries before it was perfect!
We're hiring!

Seventh Sister Souvenirs is looking for sales associates and a manager. Our sales associates are the “face” of the Friends for thousands of park visitors. If you enjoy meeting new people and sharing your love of our beautiful park with them, our sales associate job is a great fit!

Please forward to anyone you think might be interested. These are really key roles for the Friends.
Park Supervisor Jack Hines gets a well-deserved promotion
(and moves to Harkness State Park)

We have mixed feelings about announcing Park Supervisor Jack Hine's recent promotion. Jack has been an amazing partner for the Friends, bringing enthusiasm, vision, clear thinking and a "how can we make it work?" attitude to everything we try to do. It won't quite be the same without him. The board presented him with a photo montage of his time with the Friends at our last meeting.

Jack will continue to hold a "loose rein" on the Castle while the state searches for his successor. We know that everyone who has come into contact with Jack over the course of his tenure at Gillette Castle will wish him well and be grateful for the opportunity to have worked with him.
Additional April happenings: The 2022 First Ferry celebration and a bit of clock repair
The "First Ferry" celebration was a lot of fun. About 50 people showed up for the pedestrian-only Connecticut river cruise and pastries/coffee from Hadlyme Country Market. Dignitaries included DOT Commissioner Joseph Giulietti, State Senator Norm Needleman, State Representatives Irene Haines and Devin Carney. Sunshine on the river! What could be better! See the pictures here.
Friends member Ed Markunas assessed an original Seth Thomas pendulum clock under the watchful eye of park staff member Sarah Lucey. The clock stopped last year, and Park Supervisor Jack Hine asked if the Friends could help. Ed's significant expertise with antique clocks fit the bill! The clock needed a bit of cleaning, which was performed elsewhere in the Castle. It now hangs again in the great room, welcoming visitors with its slow and regular "tick-tock."
Don't forget the 1920s picnic!
