CONRAD, Joseph [1857-1924]

Joseph Conrad and "The book "NOSTROMO" was first published in 1904 after nearly three years of intensive writing inspired by actual events occurring a quarter of a century earlier. Perhaps had the original events which stimulated Conrad to write his monumental tome been related in a more linear manner told in a straightforward chronological manner, Nostromo might be as widely read as Heart of Darkness.
A second UK English edition of this book was published in 1918 which is the focus of this collection.

BOUTROUX, Étienne Émile Marie (1845-1921)

Étienne Émile Marie Boutroux was an eminent 19th century French philosopher of science and religion, and an historian of philosophy. He was a professor of history of modern philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris, and an elected a member of Academy of the Moral and Political Sciences in 1898. The author of more than 20 books on Descartes, Pascal, Leibniz, Fichte, and William James, he was a firm opponent of materialism in science and maintained that religion and science are compatible.

OPPENHEIM, Edward Phillips (1866-1943)

E. Phillips Oppenheim was a best-selling English novelist who wrote approximately 100 novels and 40 anthologies of short stories. He is considered one of the originators of the thriller genre, his novels also range from spy thrillers to romance, but all have an undertone of intrigue.

HARRADEN, Beatrice (1864-1936)

Beatrice Harraden was an influential British novelist, publishing seventeen novels, besides journalism and letters to the editor, short stories, a suffrage play and pamphlet, and children's books. She was a leader of the suffragette movement, the Women's Social and Political Union. Her novel, Ships That Pass in the Night (1893), a love story set in a tuberculosis sanatorium, sold over one million copies. In 1883, she received her BA degree as well as an honors degree in Classics and Mathematics, which would have been a noteworthy feat for a woman in this era.

LOOS, Anita [1889-1981]

Anita Loos was an American screenwriter, playwright and author, best known for her blockbuster comic novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She wrote film scripts from 1912, and became arguably the first-ever staff scriptwriter, when D.W. Griffith put her on the payroll at Triangle Film Corporation. She went on to write many of the Douglas Fairbanks films, as well as the stage adaptation of Colette's Gigi. JOHNSON, Sir John [1741-1830] etc

15 Legal documents prepared for a potential very high profile court case and documents dating circa 1798. Herman Leroi, William Bayard & Gerrit Boon James Jackson, Peter Smith, William Laight & John Jacob Astor are some plantiffs. The documents refer to the eligibility of a group of men in Canada to make claim for losses due to land confiscations in the American Revolution. Most plantiffs were United Empire Loyalists who left the Mohawk Valley of New York from land owed by Sir William Johnson. Included is the depositions is Sir John Johnson, Sir William's son.

Sir John Johnson, was a soldier, Loyalist, public servant (b at Mohawk Valley, NY 5 Nov 1742; d at Mount Johnson, near Montréal 4 Jan 1830). He was the son of Sir William Johnson and heir to the Johnson family's massive Mohawk Valley estates. With the outbreak of the American Revolution, he moved to Montréal and organized and commanded the 2 battalions of King's Royal Regiment (KRR) of NY, a Loyalist Provincial corps... 3 hand written notebooks by a British military police officer, Y?. Norton about life, events, settlement, and crime in Mandatory Palestine during World War II in 1943 and 1944. "Mandatory Palestine" existed for almost two decades (1929 to 1948). As the day of May 14, 1948 came to an end, so did Mandatory Palestine. Mere hours earlier, a new document had been issued: the Israeli Declaration of Independence.

Loosely inserted is a reproduction on a tin type of General John Winder (1800-1865), the Confederate general.

CARLETON, Sir Guy 1st Baron DORCHESTER [1724-1808]

Written in French, on a watermarked, fine-laid paper, dated June 24, 1775, Boldy signed by Sir Guy Carleton in dark brown ink. Carleton's signature, is next to an intact square papered seal. Lieutenant-Governor Hector Theophilus Cramahé countersigns the document with his signature below Carleton's.
12-1/4 x 8-1/2 inches, one page with integral leaf. Several folds, scattered light foxing and toning, and several very minor edge tears. Very good condition and overall quite nice.

Carleton presses to fill the militia ranks. In part:  "As it is necessary for the service of the King... to create militia companies in the various parishes of this Province... do hereby name and establish said Mr. Jean Bte. "Lord Stanley"  engraving London published by Morris & Co. 392 Strand W.C.  Drawn by C.W. Walton. Paper size is 17-1/2" x 23-5/8". Plate mark size is 10-1/2" x 13". Image size is 5" x 7".
Signature Imprint:  Lord Stanley [facsimile signature], Stanley family motto, "Sans Changer" or without changing. Printed image of Lord Stanley with different toned white background is mounted on a larger heavier white sheet with black imprinting. Overall engraving as been washed and cleaned and some minor paper repairs made to top left corner and bottom left corner with only a couple of minor darker marks remaining. DOCUMENT CONTRIBUTING TO THE 1837/38 UPPER CANADA REBELLIONS

[1836]. [Toronto], Printed by order of the Commons House of Assembly. Quarto. 7 pages. Among the 27 rules included are: "Rule No. 5 : That all polls shall be held in the open air, or in some building, not a Tavern, to which free access can be had by every Elector -- and no woman shall be allowed to vote''; "Rule No. 24 : That no man of color shall be hindered from voting, if otherwise qualified". Rare Upper Canada imprint printed by Robert Stanton (1794-1866). Open 1/4 tear in upper border not affecting any text, otherwise, very good condition. The Bill was passed after third and final reading on April 15, 1836, [22 Yeas and 4 Nays) 2nd Sess. 12th Parl. 6th. The act to be called, "An Act to Provide Elections throughout this Province". 
The Conservative party, led by the wealthy landowners known as the "Family Compact", won the election resulting in a conservative majority in the legislative assembly and triggering dissent in the province. This was the last parliament for Upper Canada.

John Holland - printmaker; British (of Peterhouse, Cambridge. Etcher.) Pencil sketch or drawing on heavy paper, cut in an oval shape, 6" high by 5" wide approximately. On the bottom right quadrant of the portrait a tiny but,  visible  monogram, reading JH 1753. (John Holland?)
ON the reverse of the drawing is written, "John Holland Esq.  and farther below a date of 1753.

On  Donhead House Shaftesbury blind embossed letterhead (Anthony Eden lived at Donhead House for a year following the Suez Crisis of 1956). Dated July 31st, 1958. Marked PERSONAL. Writing with appreciation and comments about the Suez Crisis of 1956,, and noting: "I was quite sure that in time the purpose I had in mind would be understood.
