NMI
We have recently uploaded two newly created Missionary Presentations to our District NMI Website. Samuel and Supranee Yangmi,  Missionaries to Thailand, were scheduled for Deputation Tour on our District in October but due to Covid-19, their in-person tour had to be cancelled.  Thankfully, the Yangmi's agreed to record their presentation so that it can be available for each of our churches to hear what God is doing in their region!   The video is approximately 43 minutes in length which may be challenging to keep a large group engaged for that length of time.   I encourage each local President and Mission Council to preview the view and come up with a creative way to share this video (or parts of it that you choose) with as many from your congregation as possible.  Possibilities include individuals, small groups, Sunday School classes, small gatherings or the whole church.   After the viewing we ask you to pray together for Samuel and Supranee Yangmi, their family and God's work in Thailand.   Then, we ask that you give the opportunity for those wish to financially support the ministry.  That offering, along with any additional amount designated by your local Church for Deputation, should be sent to the General Treasurer, Church of the Nazarene with Samuel & Supranee Yangmi Deputation in the Memo.  Following your presentation(s) please share a brief report about the number of times the video was presented, approximately how many people viewed the presentation, did the group(s) gather to prayer for the Yangmi's and their ministry, was an opportunity for supporting them financially offered  text Gail Peachey at 309-335-7132 or nwildeputation@gmail.com

Yangmi Brief Bio:
Samuel and Supranee Yangmi are career missionaries sent from Global Mission since 1993. Sam graduated from Mid-America Nazarene University in 1984.

On the mission field, Sam currently serves as the District Superintendent for the Northern Mekong District. He served as the DS for the Northern Thailand District for 13 years and helped grow the district from 5 Churches to 20 Churches, the District is now weaned off to national leadership. Sam also serves as the Thailand country coordinator.

Sam and Lumae have 4 daughters, Nellie, Julie, Samantha, and Anzie, along with 2 sons-in-law, 2 granddaughters and 2 grandsons.

The second video is presented by Casey Bloom, a Nazarene missionary in Romania, who grew up in the Freeport Church of the Nazarene here on Northwest Illinois District!   After graduating from Olivet Nazarene University with a degree in Social Work and working in a local agency she went on to receive her Masters of Social Work from the University of Illinois.  While serving as a teen camp counselor, Casey knew God was calling her to missions.   In 2015 Casey received her first assignment serving in Sighisoara, Romania.  She combines her desire to be the hands and feet of Jesus with her background in social work in order to connect with and serve others.
You will be inspired and encouraged as you watch her brief video update (under 5 minutes) in which she shares her heart and some changes taking place in her assignment.  Please be sure to read the accompanying flyer from Casey and follow her on Facebook and other social media platforms.  Again, we encourage you to present Casey's video in your church service, in small groups, individually or by other creative means.  Pray together for Casey and the people of Romania where she serves.  Please hand out her flyer and give the opportunity to join in praying for the prayer requests as well as the opportunity to support her work financially. Following your presentation(s) please share a brief report about the number of times the video was presented, approximately how many people viewed the presentation, did the group(s) gather to prayer for Casey and her ministry, was an opportunity for supporting her financially offered-- text Gail Peachey at 309-335-7132 or nwildeputation@gmail.com

[Casey left the US five years ago on faith believing that God had a place and purpose for her in Romania fully aware that she had financial responsibilities for school loans still to be covered.  If anyone would be led in helping to pay down Casey's school loans specifically, please contact me:  Gail Peachey 309-335-7132, for more information.]

Global NYI
Calling our generation to a dynamic life in Christ

In Evangelism, we are called to BE God's light in the dark and ignored places of our world. We are to BE a faithful example of God's unconditional love. In BEING in Christ and BEING with others, we allow the Holy Spirit to work through our lives and we trust God with the results.

Through Discipleship, we journey together with other believers as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus. As we DO life together, we learn what it means to talk together, serve together, sacrifice together, fall and get back up together. We DO the hard work of becoming more like our Savior, living surrendered lives in community.

In Leadership Development, we challenge and empower youth and their leaders to GO out into their communities as models of Christ's servant leadership. We cannot afford to wait until we think we know enough; we must GO now, learning along the way.

Havana

On Sunday, October 4th, 2020, we took in their first two members in the era of the Covid 19 Pandemic.  Normally when we take in members we give them what I call the "Nazarene Treatment" by having the entire congregation file by and give handshakes, hugs and words of congratulations. However, this time, due to Covid 19 and the need to socially distance the congregation passed by Teri Ray at a distance and waved to her and called out words of congratulations.  Then the congregation passed by the camera and waved to Katie Roat who was joining in absentia from Carlyle, Illinois.  Here is a little more information about our two new members:

Teri Ray came to our church during our 95th anniversary celebration in June 2018. She began attending the services and expressed a desire to join. Teri has battled with sickness and some physical challenges but managed to persevere through membership classes.  She has lived in the Havana area all her life and we are very pleased that she has chosen to be a part of the Havana Nazarene family.

Katie Roat comes back to Havana by transfer.  She "married into" Havana Nazarene back in 1969 when she married Jerry Roat. Katie was a member of Havana church for over 40 years until she moved to Ohio and transferred.  From Ohio Katie moved to the state of Wyoming and lived there for a few years.  Recently she moved back to Illinois and lives in Carlyle.  Katie now worships with us from a distance via Facebook live.  We are delighted to have her back with us. -Pastor Jim Buchanan

Spiritual Formation over 200 books to choice from

John Wesley

At its heart, the theology of John Wesley stressed the life of Christian holiness: to love God with all one's heart, mind, soul and strength, and to love one's neighbour as oneself. Wesley's teaching also stressed experiential religion and moral responsibility.

What people think affects what they do, and what people do affects what they think.

There is no better illustration of this adage than John Wesley, the pivotal founder of Methodism. For Wesley, thinking and living went hand in hand.

John Wesley: His Life and Thought introduces readers to both Wesley's story and his beliefs. By neither leaning too much on biography nor focusing solely on theology, this book offers a balanced and accessible portrait that couches Wesley's beliefs and ideas firmly within his life story. There are no minutiae or scholarly controversies here. This book paints in broad strokes the key events in Wesley's life that not only influence his thinking but also his approach to the church, the Methodist movement, and the society and world beyond.

For anyone wanting a sound but lucid introduction to Wesley and his life and work, this book should be at the top of the list. It doesn't just familiarize the reader with Wesley but paves the way for deeper study.

What did John Wesley think about alcohol, music, and popularity? What are his thoughts on education, free will, and joy?
From absolution to zeal, Quotable Wesley is a treasury of quotations taken from Wesley's letters, sermons, tracts, and journal entries on a variety of wide-ranging topics. Here is an essential resource for teachers, Christian leaders, pastors, and laypeople fascinated by the insights of this remarkable founder of the Methodist movement. Useful for sermon preparation, teaching, and individual reflection, this book is designed to supplement the library of anyone interested in Wesley and his work.

30 Days with Wesley a Prayer Book
Experience prayer as a special means of grace.
Filled with prayers, Psalms, and self-examination questions, this 30-day prayer book will guide you through rich content and help you encounter greater depth in your prayer life. With the help of the Holy Spirit, the hours of prayer can be a means through which time is sanctified, communities are unified, hearts are edified, and God's transforming love is experienced.

This is a systematic theology for the clergy and alert laypersons of the many Wesleyan-Holiness denominations and parachurch groups and for United Methodism itself--as well as others who wish to know or need to know what the shape of Wesleayn-Holiness theology is. The views are supported basically from Scripture, with corroborative support from John Wesley and the Holiness Movement--and from the entire remembered past of the Church. It prefers John Wesley (a father of the church birthed later on) to the Holiness Movement on many issues, as on the witness of the Spirit. It prefers the Holiness Movement to Mr. Wesley on two important matters: entire sanctification as instantaneous only and not also gradual (although sanctification as such is gradual); and on entire sanctification's being effected by Christ's baptism with the Holy Spirit.

This work takes the basic tenets of John Wesley and states them in more contemporary terms.  An excellent resource for those who desire to understand the Wesleyan tradition.

Herein is a most discriminating study of the basic differences between historic Calvinism and Arminianism and the developments in both theological traditions that have created the mounting barriers to the understanding of each other's position. Dr. Wynkoop deals authoritatively with the critical issues, and incisively cuts through the prevalent fuzzy theological concepts, but all with delicacy and understanding. The monumental contribution of John Wesley in defining the doctrine of sanctification is a key emphasis in the book, along with the central issue of Christian assurance. Paper.
Phineas F. Bresee

Phineas Bresee dreamed of a church for all people that would lead them into a deep and fulfilling Christian life. Bresee's story celebrates the call to take the gospel to the poor, the displaced, and the marginalized.

Available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French
In 1895, Phineas Franklin Bresee established in Los Angeles the first congregation of what he envisioned as a new denomination. Its purpose was to conserve and advance the doctrine and experience of entire sanctification as it had been taught in early Methodism and developed in the 19th century Holiness Movement. Just as important, he saw it as a force to minister to the poor of his day.

In Phineas F. Bresee, Carl Bangs tells the story of Bresee from his boyhood in New York's Catskill Mountains through his ministerial career in Iowa and California. Uncover the whole story of Bresee as the aggressive evangelistic pastor, editor, presiding elder, and General Conference delegate in Iowa who built churches, established a college, and engaged in business enterprise with Civil War financier Jay Cooke.

Throughout this study, Bangs places Bresee's life in the broader context of American religious history to show the emergence of a talented churchman and Methodist leader who, at age 57, stepped aside from a prominent place in Methodism to be shepherd of the holiness people.

The story of Bresee from his boyhood in New York's Catskill Mountains through his ministerial career in Iowa and California.

In this authentic biography, young readers will meet the founderof the Church of the Nazarene. An inspiring story portraying the background and history-making events leading to the formation of the church.

The official biography, fresh and moving as it was written 60 years ago by a man who knew him personally. For the last 3 years of Bresee's life, Girvin recorded Dr. Bresee's account of past events. Cloth.

What do a boy, a boxcar and a buggy have in common? Phineas F. Bresee of course! But how do these things relate together in this newly-revised biography of one of the most well-known names in Nazarene history ? You'll have to read it in order to find out! Part of a Core Value badge requirement at the Explorer Sentry level, this book tells an endearing life-story that can be appreciated by Nazarenes of all ages.

Not since apostolic times had a greater thrust of evangelism and missionary fervor been seen than during the 19th century. Inevitably this Holiness revival brought a greater awareness and interest in the work of the Holy Spirit. This volume is a compilation of testimonies, sermons, and other writings of well-known Holiness leaders such as William Adams, Aaron Lummus, Orange Scott, Phoebe Palmer, Whitall Smith, Benjamin T. Roberts, Martin Wells Knapp, Phineas Bresee, and many others. This is volume 4 in the six-volume set of Great Holiness Classics. Cloth.

Church Multiplication Endowment Fund
Give a GIFT that doesn't stop Giving!

Would you give $1.00 a month if it never stopped giving, never wore out, never changed its usefulness or purpose and transformed lives?

How many times do we give a gift to someone only to see it discarded at a later date or discover it was never used as intended? Have you ever wanted to give a gift that would never grow old or wear out, that would always be used for good and made a difference for eternity? NOW you can!

Jesus said "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."

Would you partner with your Northwestern Illinois District's vision to plant churches?  You might wonder how you can make a difference or even be a part. Everyone can. We need some to plant, we need everyone to pray and we need many to invest.

The Church Multiplication Endowment Fund is designed to reach unreached people living on the NWIL District for Christ. Every dollar given will continue to give in perpetuity. An endowment fund uses the interest from the principle to do kingdom work.  Will you help fund this goal?

Currently, our district property funds have been invested in planting 22 new churches these past three years and the district is in need of capital to continue to plant more! We need your help. Presently, there are 36 more potential church plants in various stages of planning which will require additional funding support.

Help us reach our GOAL of planting 300 churches by 2030.  We see 300 churches as 3,000 disciplemakers who disciple 15,000 disciples gathering with 30,000 worshippers.  Every dollar you give will continue to reach people for Christ your whole lifetime and beyond.

Would you consider a GIFT of $1.00 a month?  We are not trying to take money from your local ministry where you give your tithes and offerings. We are asking for many to give a little.  Our initial goal is 5,000 giving at least $1.00 a month. Would you be one of those 5,000 making a commitment to create a movement to plant churches that change lives?  Here are ways to give:

 1. You can give to your local church by marking your check or cash gift "NWIL CM Endowment" and your church treasurer will take it from there.

 2. You can also choose to give online if you want to set up one time or reoccurring payments using debit/credit/Electronic Check on the district website at nwilnaz.org/GIVE/ On District Church Planting or direct  CM Endowment Giving LINK. Or scan this QR code at the bottom of this article.

3. You can send a check or cash to NWIL District, 3520 Broadway St., Pekin, IL 61554 (please indicate CM Endowment on check memo)

We are also looking for those who might like to make greater kingdom investments!

You can give cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, livestock, grain, or other personal property.  Basically, any asset of marketable value can be used to help fund this endowment. There are also charitable gift annuity options that allow you to specify the endowment fund or another ministry of your choice while allowing you to receive income for your lifetime and when you pass, your gift goes to the endowment fund or specified ministry. CLICK HERE to see other ways to model generosity.
