Regular Meeting
Dawn Livingston, Board President, thanked the school community for working together to make learning in-person possible for the first half of our school year. She noted that the Board and Administration continues their commitment to both improve our current hybrid model and focus on plans for the future, specifically extending our school day. She asked the community to remain patient during this process, as the District is making plans that uphold safety, manage student and staff needs, follow public health guidance, and consider the various perspectives in our community.
Trisha Kocanda, Superintendent, acknowledged the District's maintenance and buildings and grounds staff for clearing the snow to make our campuses safe and accessible after the recent storm. Additionally, she recognized the efforts of our staff, students, and families for the productive 2-week adaptive pause following Winter Break. She shared that the District is dedicated to planning effectively with what we know at this time and anticipate in the future, such as the availability of the vaccine for District staff.
Presentation
With the anticipation of two new Board members in April 2021, the New Board Member Orientation Plan has been updated and provided to candidates. This Plan formalizes a mentoring process with existing Board members and outlines a 20+ hour orientation schedule with District administrators and IL State training.
Plans for a return to an in-person Adventures in Learning Summer program were shared along with the framework to maintain health and safety protocols based on current CDC and ILDPH guidelines. In addition to traditional course offerings, the District will offer grade-level specific support classes for math fundamentals and reading/language arts. Registration is expected to begin in mid-March. Extended School Year (ESY) services will be offered in a format similar to last summer.
Brad Goldstein, CFO, Presented information on our summer facilities work that was bid out on January 19, 2021. The work will primarily occur at Hubbard Woods and Greeley Elementary Schools, including piping to mitigate lead, roofing, and flooring. This work is part of the second year of a 3-year capital improvement plan. The total package including construction management, engineering and architectural work totals just under $3.8 million. This will be paid utilizing fund balance earmarked by the Board for this work.
The Board received an update on staffing and enrollment, which has remained steady since the fall. A typical January Board meeting would include a preliminary staffing plan; however as this plan will eminently depend on both the impact of the vaccine and any accompanying adjustments made to health and safety protocols, it will be critical to assess the needs of students following this uniquely significant school year when making final staffing decisions.

Regular meetings are open to the public and will be held at Carleton Washburne School through June 2021. Regular meetings begin at 7:15 p.m. Work sessions are also open to the public and may be scheduled at the discretion of the Board. Discussion topics and times for work sessions will be posted on the District website 24 hours in advance. |
