NEW! GELN Mathematics Essentials
Essential Instructional Practices in Early Mathematics: Prekindergarten to Grade 3
This document was developed by the MAISA Early Mathematics Task Force, a subcommittee of the Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA) General Education Leadership Network (GELN), which represents Michigan's 56 Intermediate School Districts.

This document is a tool intended to support educators across Michigan as we work to enhance the ways in which children learn to use, understand, and do mathematics using a strengths-based approach.
School Aid Budget
Literacy
  • Sec 35a(4) early literacy/literacy coaches – The state budget appropriation will raise the funding level $14.0 million for a total of $21.0 million.
  • Sec 35a(8) early literacy/literacy essentials – The state budget appropriated $1 million which will be used to continue to increase Michigan's capacity to improve children's literacy by identifying a small set of research-supported literacy practices that should be a focus of professional development throughout the state.

MAISA is looking forward to supporting early literacy professional learning for Michigan in 2019-20, under the leadership of the Early Literacy Task Force. In addition to the increased funding for ISD Early Literacy Coaches, we will continue the professional learning supports for coaches, teachers, and principals through the state budget as identified in 35a subsection 8. The language calls for us to increase Michigan's capacity to improve children's literacy by continuing professional learning around the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy , as well as the Coaching and School-wide Practices.

MiDataHubs
  • Sec 22m Data Hub – The budget contained a $2.2 million appropriation which will fund the Michigan Data Hub. The Data Hub is a collaborative, statewide effort to address challenges in managing and using school data. The work of this initiative has centered around creating an ecosystem where information is exchanged between the large number of disconnected data systems used by schools in the state based on predefined standards.

Special Education
  • Sec 51f Special Education Cost Reimbursement – The state budget includes $60.2 million in School Aid Fund (SAF) to increase reimbursements for districts’ and ISDs’ special education costs by approximately 2.0 percentage points.

Announcing REMC’s free Virtual Courses for November
Seven courses are offered in November. Each course is open for three weeks and consists of two (2) one-hour “live” webinars that are recorded, available viewing later and eight (8) hours of resource review, assessment developments and written reflection. All REMC courses are open to all Michigan school personnel. There are no registration or SCECH fees.
