Historical Tidbit:

Wheelwright
The Blacksmith and Wheelwright were often housed together and usually the same person. The Blacksmith would keep good shoes on the feet of those large workhorses that worked the farms and delivered goods. As a Wheelwright, he kept the tires on the wagons.

Occasionally the tires had to be repaired because in the summer season, the wheels would dry out and the tires would loosen. The wagon would be brought to the Wheelwright and the tires would be taken off the wheel. The tire would be "upset," i.e., made a little smaller. The wheel would be placed on a big millstone that was outside in back of the shop. The tire rim would be heated in a bonfire nearby, brought into the shop red hot and dropped over the wheel. When cooled, the iron or steel tires would contract, thus making it tight again around the wheel. This process, called "setting wheels," would have to be done to all wagon wheels.

Raynham Police Recognize Community Member who
Helps Provide Holiday Cheer to Families in Need
Chief James Donovan and the Raynham Police Department would like to recognize Candace Dalton, who grew up in the area and has worked with School Resource Officer Louis Pacheco over the past few years to donate gift cards that are then passed out to students and families in need.

Each year, Dalton buys gift cards from stores like Walmart and gives them to SRO Pacheco to distribute to students and families as he works in the schools throughout the year. The gift cards can help families in need buy food, small holiday gifts or other items.

“We would like to recognize and sincerely thank Candace for her donations each holiday season, which help SRO Pacheco assist families throughout the year,” Chief Donovan said. “It’s easy to see that she genuinely cares for the community and wants to help make the holidays brighter for families in need.”

The Raynham Police and Fire Departments also hold Secret Santa and Stuff the Cruiser fundraisers to help families during the holiday season.

“Candace’s donations add a little something extra to our holiday fundraisers and we are truly thankful to her for helping us help our community,” Officer Pacheco said.

Architecture & Place-making:

From MIT Whitepaper called Places in the Making (2013) " While the place is important, the "making" builds connections, creates civic engagement, and empowers citizens—in short, it builds social capital ... The relationships that grow out of the "making" are equal to, if not more important than, the places that result."

The above quote is about public places that invite spontaneous collaboration, discussion or gaming (chess & checker tables) and what they do for us as a community. When we surround ourselves with thoughtful ideas, we are nurtured and more come.

“An idea is salvation by imagination.”
~ Frank Lloyd Wright

“To create, one must first question everything.” ~ Eileen Gray

"For me, architecture is not just creating a space to protect people but to make them dream as well." ~ Mario Botta

"I try to give people a different way of looking at their surroundings. That's art to me." ~Maya Lin
The space that we surround ourselves with can feed our soul and inspire it... whether it be architecture, art, or nature. We can do this for our selves, in our own home and family and in our communities.
~ Jacquie
