Greetings,

Happy end of Week 5! You are half-way through the Fall quarter and we hope it has been full of new experiences and opportunities. We're not done yet and we hope the rest of your quarter only gets better for you!

Thank you to all of those that came to our first Colleges @ CASP event of the year, and thank you to the College's academic advising teams. Didn't get the chance to participate? Not to worry, you can still meet with your college academic advisor during their regular walk-in hours. We will be having another session during the Winter Quarter, so stay tuned for more information.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and California Dream Act application  is now available.
 
For any questions regarding your FAFSA/CA Dream Act application, please contact the Financial Aid and Scholarship office at  finaid@ucsd.edu  or (858) 534-4480.

Please note: Students and parents who are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) can access it from within the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the student or parent finances pages.

The IRS DRT allows you to securely transfer original IRS tax return information, but not Form 1040X amended tax return information. If you filed a Form 1040X amended tax return, you may need to work with your Financial Aid Administrator to ensure that any information you corrected on Form 1040X is reflected in the amounts transferred to your FAFSA.

UC San Diego (excluding hospitals and clinics)  will officially close for eight (8) days between Monday,  December 23, 2019 and Wednesday, January 1, 2020.  All office will reopen for their regular business hours on Thursday, January 2nd. For any questions or concerns regarding specific office availability, please contact each office individually.

The topic next month is Adjusting to School  breaks.  Please join the Women's Center for a supportive discussion and an opportunity to connect with other UCSD parents. Open to all moms and dads of any age, partnered or single.  Feel free to bring and eat lunch at the discussion.

The Discovering Your Career Compass workshops are designed to help students (particularly APIMEDA students) explore their academic and career options and affirm or reaffirm those choices.

ā— Opportunities to interact with APIMEDA-identified presenters who may have a more specific cultural context to some populations of APIMEDA students

Their goal is to increase access to higher education for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students and their families.

Underground Scholars was started in 2013 by formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students at UC Berkeley as the Underground Scholars Initiative (USI), a student organization. 

Berkeley Underground Scholars (BUS) was established by USI in 2017. And in the last few years, USI has expanded throughout the entire UC-system. With a chapter at UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, and now at UC San Diego!

PortSDPORT OF SAN DIEGO PAID INTERNSHIPS
The People Strategies Team in the Port of San Diego provides a year round paid internship program for all full-time college students.

These internships are looking for:

Avid learner, innovative contributor, collaborator, trustworthy, others-focused, personable and humble.  

 

The People Strategies team designs programs and processes to improve individual and Departmental performance at the Port of San Diego.  Below are some examples of where People Strategies deliver their advisory, coaching, and strategic planning services:

HACUHACU NATIONAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Whether you're seeking an internship with the federal government or in the corporate sector, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) offers students a variety of opportunities to allow you to graduate with career experience. For over 27 years, the HACU National Internship Program has partnered with organizations seeking to diversify their workforce.

ELIGIBILITY:
  • Be enrolled in a degree-seeking program at an accredited institution in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. Recent graduates are eligible for a limited number of internships
  • Must have completed freshman year
  • Must be an undergraduate or graduate student
  • 3.0 GPA is recommended and not required on a 4.0 scale 
  • Be authorized or eligible to work by law in the U.S.
TRAVEL AND HOUSING
  • Round-trip airfare for interns is arranged and paid by HACU.
  • Federal interns can choose to arrange their own housing or can request HACUarranged housing. Federal interns in HACU-arranged housing pay through payroll deductions and corporate interns pay via electronic funds transfer.

soros2020PAUL & DAISY SOROS FELLOWSHIPS FOR NEW AMERICANS

Every year, The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans supports thirty New Americans, immigrants or the children of immigrants, who are pursuing graduate school in the United States.

Who is eligible for the Fellowship? The P.D. Fellowship is open to US Citizens who are the children of two immigrants, green card holders, and naturalized US Citizens, including adoptees as well as current and former DACA recipients. It is not open to visa holders. In addition, applicants must be 30 or younger as of the November 1 deadline, and they must be planning on pursuing a graduate degree full-time in the United States in the 2019-2020 academic year. Applicants who are beyond the second year of the graduate program that they are seeking funding for as of the November deadline are not eligible.

Ensure your continued success at UC San Diego! Second-year students are encouraged to sign up for 2Excel or 2Connect offering community, advising, and other resources to help you deal with second-year issues, topics, and challenges.

2Excel
2Excel provides holistic support through personal, academic, and professional development.

How to apply:
    • You must be a second-year student who entered UC San Diego as a freshman to apply to the program (no transfer students)
    • Program capacity is limited to 170 students
    • Submit an online application by spring quarter of your freshman year; registration is open for the 2019-20 academic year
Expectations:
  • Year-long participation from fall quarter to spring quarter
  • Required attendance at a minimum of 2 workshops per quarter
  • Mandatory meetings with your peer mentor 3 times per quarter
  • Enrollment in EDS 23 (a 2-unit, pass/no-pass seminar offered winter quarter
  • Completion of a program assessment exercise at the end of the academic year

2Connect
Compared to the 
2Excel program, the 2Connect program provides more personal freedom and self-directed participation, following your individual needs.

How to apply:
  • You must be a second-year student to register for the program
  • All second-year UC San Diego students are welcome (unlimited capacity)
  • Submit this online registration form by fall quarter of your second year
Expectations:
  • Year-long participation from fall quarter to spring quarter
  • Completion of a program assessment exercise at the end of the academic year
