Associate Professor Jerry Crawford  was interviewed by The New York Times’ Nicholas Corasaniti  for the article, “Cory Booker Bets $100 Billion on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.” The article focuses on Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Cory Booker’s plans to help Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Multicultural Serving Institutions by providing financial help for STEM and Pell Grant loans as part of a broader focus on their futures.  Read the article here.  

Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo was interviewed in a BBC story about censorship and tech companies in China. Read the story.

Steve Rottinghaus , career and outreach coordinator, presented “Performance Enhancing Career Fair” at the Kansas Association for Colleges and Employers Conference on Dec. 6 at the Kauffman Foundation Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He focused on the J-School combining J-School Generations with the fall career fair at the Adams Alumni Center on Oct. 24-25.

Professor Tien Lee ’s students will present their work at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Pine Room of the Kansas Union. The client is the KU Bookstore.

Assistant Professor Joseph Erba ’s students will present their work at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Kansas Room of the Kansas Union. The client is Meals on Wheels. Due to limited seating, please contact Erba if you are thinking of attending the presentations.

Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen ’s students will present their work at 6 p.m. Dec. 11 in the Pine Room of the Kansas Union. The client is  Ruler of Hope , a nonprofit organization providing support and research for medically fragile children.

Student News and Opportunities
Students from Gerri Berendzen ’s Digital Media Tools advanced media class have been presenting their semester projects this week and last. Some students created and disseminated email newsletters, and others did a project for an outside client involving social media, analytics or an interactive digital tool. Mallorie McBride revamped the Instagram account for Square Peg Marketing and Branding, tracked analytics and developed posting recommendations for the company.  Nolan Brey and Savanna Smith added digital accessibility features to the University Daily Kansan website for photos and videos. Andrew Rosenthal used Knightlab software to create drone and 360-degree photos of the Washburn athletic facilities for the Washburn University website. Katie Scott did a social media analytics analysis for radio station 106.5 and presented her findings to the station. Conner Walter worked with Crunch Fitness to improve its social media presence. Other students did social media or analytics projects for the Kansan, Chalk magazine and Rock Chalk Video.

Entries are being accepted for the 60th annual Hearst Journalism Awards. Students may enter in the following categories: Writing, Photojournalism, Radio, Television and Multimedia. Learn more here.
Apply now for McNair Scholars Program
The McNair Scholars Program is a federal program funded by the U.S. Department of Education that prepares students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and scholarly activities. McNair Scholars are first-generation, low-income students and/or members of underrepresented minority groups in higher education. The McNair Scholars Program is   currently accepting applications to the program   for the 2019-2020 academic year. Learn more and apply here.
Berlin Capital Program
Operated by the German-American Fulbright Commission, the Berlin Capital Program (May 23-30, 2020) invites young U.S. journalists and students of journalism to Germany. The weeklong seminar allows them to take a closer look at the German media landscape and gain a deeper awareness of the political, economic and cultural environment in Germany and Europe. If you enter from the back side of Dole (side closest to Stauffer-Flint) you will go to the left, then straight toward the Kansan newsroom. Diversity analysis of the University Daily Kansan presentation
Through funding from the Center for Undergraduate Research, students in J534: Diversity in Media partnered with the Kansan this semester to conduct a diversity analysis of the student paper through content analysis, interviews and focus groups. They will present their findings at a poster session from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Ballroom of the Kansas Union. They also will present to the provost and deans at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 12 in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union. All are invited to support the students at either session.

Korva Coleman Diversity in Journalism Internship
Applications are now open for the Korva Coleman Diversity in Journalism Internship, which is geared toward training college students of color to be part of the next generation of public radio reporters and newscasters. The Coleman intern will get an immersive, hands-on learning experience at KMUW, Wichita’s award-winning National Public Radio station, as well as mentoring from NPR newscaster Coleman.
