World Building: Explorations in Writing Books for Children
Kathryn Lasky has written over 100 books for children, including picture books, fiction and nonfiction. She is a Newbery Honor medalist and two-time winner of the National Jewish book award. Lasky is best known for the animal fantasy series The Guardians of Ga'Hoole which was made into an animated film, Legend of The Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole.
Lasky will describe how she creates these worlds of fantasy, and how she researches her historical fiction. Do these worlds of fantasy, history and nonfiction ever overlap?

To Mr. and Mrs. Watson, Mercy is not just a pig -- she's a porcine wonder. And to the portly and good-natured Mercy, the Watsons are an excellent source of buttered toast, not to mention that buttery-toasty feeling she gets when she snuggles into bed with them. This is not, however, so good for the Watsons' bed. BOOM! CRACK! As the bed and its occupants slowly sink through the floor, Mercy escapes in a flash -- "to alert the fire department," her owners assure themselves. But could Mercy possibly have another emergency in mind -- like a sudden craving for their neighbors' sugar cookies?

Binky is a space cat - at least in his own mind. He's really a house cat who has never left the family ?space station.' Unlike other house cats, Binky has a mission: to blast off into outer space (outside), explore unknown places (the backyard) and battle aliens (bugs). Binky must undergo rigorous training so he can repel the alien attacks that threaten his humans. As he builds his spaceship, he must be extremely careful with his blueprints - the enemy is always watching. Soon Binky is ready to voyage into outer space. His humans go out there every day and he's sure they need a certified space cat to protect them. But just as he's about to blast off with his co-pilot, Ted (stuffed mousie), Binky realizes that he's left something very important behind ... and it's not the zero-gravity kitty litter.

Diana leads an idyllic life on the island of Themyscira. Cut off from the rest of the world, she's beginning to feel more and more isolated. Though she has a loving mother and many "aunties," she is an only child. THE only child child on the island, in fact. After an escapade goes wrong, Diana gets in trouble for not living up to the Amazonian standard. She just can't seem to measure up no matter what she does. Every other person on the island is an adult proficient in their trade and mighty in body, while she is gangly, sometimes clumsy, and not particularly good at anything. She's not Wonder Woman ... yet. What Diana needs is a friend; someone her own age whom she can talk to. But when she decides to take matters into her own hands, she may just make a monster instead of a friend.

Meet America's first spy Nathan Hale in this installment of the New York Times bestselling graphic novel series! "I regret that I have but one life to give for my country." These are the famous last words of Nathan Hale, a spy for the American rebels in the Revolutionary War. But who was this Nathan Hale? Page Turners (4th & 5th Grades)

Space-obsessed 12-year-old Paola Santiago and her two best friends, Emma and Dante, know the rule: Stay away from the river. Pao has been told to stay away for even longer than that, because her mother is constantly warning her about La Llorona, the wailing ghost woman who wanders the banks of the Gila river at night, looking for young people to drag into its murky depths. Pao organises a meet-up to test out her new telescope near the Gila, since it's the best stargazing spot. But when Emma never arrives and Pao sees a shadowy figure in the reeds, it seems like maybe her mum was right...

On Emblem Island all are born knowing their fate. Their lifelines show the course of their life and an emblem dictates how they will spend it. Twelve-year-old Tor Luna was born with a leadership emblem, just like his mother. But he hates his mark and is determined to choose a different path for himself. So, on the annual New Year's Eve celebration, where Emblemites throw their wishes into a bonfire in the hopes of having them granted, Tor wishes for a different power. The next morning Tor wakes up to discover a new marking on his skin...the symbol of a curse that has shortened his lifeline, giving him only a week before an untimely death. There is only one way to break the curse, and it requires a trip to the notorious Night Witch. With only his village's terrifying, ancient stories as a guide, and his two friends Engle and Melda by his side, Tor must travel across unpredictable Emblem Island, filled with wicked creatures he only knows through myths, in a race against his dwindling lifeline.

"Every story needs a problem. But Panda doesn't have a problem. Unless Panda is the problem." This humorous picture book is initially told from the point of view of the narrator, who quickly loses the control of his tale when the main character, a very vocal, opinionated panda, takes over. Young readers will laugh as Panda suggests the story feature jelly bean rain, puffy purple aliens, a second panda pal, and a trip to Antarctica! Colorful, cartoon-like illustrations bring this whimsical journey to life, providing lots to look at and discover on the pages. The Panda Problem is a wonderful book to share with children ages 3-7.

Poor grumy Swashby, he just wants to retire in peace and enjoy a quiet life on the beach... but then the neighbors move in. They ring the doorbell. They bring cookies, and invite him for tea - don't they know he just wants to be left alone? So Swashby leaves messages in the sand - but his friend the sea has other plans!
This story is simply delightful! Swashby is cantakerous but loveable and readers will cheer along with each of the sea's interventions. Juana Martinez-Neal's illustrations are simply stunning. My favorite picture book of the year so far!
