RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Associate Professor Jerry Crawford has been asked to be the editor of a special edition of JoME  (Journal of Media Education)JoMe is the Broadcast Education Association's principal forum for peer-reviewed articles on pedagogy pertinent to various media, industry analysis and other scholarly activities. Crawford is working with JoME’s diversity initiative. The issue will focus on teaching, innovation and research at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). 

Assistant Dean Matt Tidwell's project "From vilified to respected? How big pharma used the COVID-19 crisis to repair its image," has been accepted for inclusion at the International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference (ICRCC) to be held March 7-9 in Orlando, Florida.

The Gunn Center for the Study of SF seeks to connect with people who teach, research, read, write or otherwise create in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and the speculative. The center is eager to hear from professors, graduate students, undergraduates and staff. If you would like to be placed on the new Gunn CSSF contact list, please email [email protected]. INSIDE THE SCHOOL
Nancy Mays is welcoming guests to her Social Media in Strategic Communications class this semester, and faculty and other students are welcome to join. Elyse Meyers will visit Mays' class at 3 p.m. Feb. 15 in Room 206 in Stauffer-Flint Hall. Meyers, who lives in Kansas City, has four million TikTok followers from around the world and works full time creating content on the app. She's amassed significant partnership deals, including with the NBC show "The Office."

Katie Bernard, j’19, reporter for The Kansas City Star, will be a guest speaker in Patricia Gaston’s Statehouse Reporting class on Feb. 16. Students, faculty and staff are invited to join the Zoom call at 1 p.m. Passcode is 918988.

Brenda Poor, j’83, was a guest speaker last week in Professor of the Practice Angie Hendershot’s J840 Media Relations seminar. Poor led a class exercise where she served in the role of a news assignment editor as students practiced pitching story ideas. The master’s degree students are working on media relations plans for organizations of their choosing throughout the term. After a career in television news, Poor completed her master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communications at KU Edwards Campus and began work in marketing and communications roles, currently serving as the director of marketing and communications for COVID Care Force based in Olathe.
STUDENT NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES
The Fall 2021 honor roll includes nearly 250 J-School students recognized for their academic achievement. Students who earn a 3.75 grade point average or above in at least 12 graded credit hours for the semester are recognized.

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters is accepting entries for its 2022 student broadcast awards. The deadline to enter is midnight Feb. 15. The awards will be presented during the student seminar at the University of Kansas on April 7. Find contest categories and instructions here. 

National Public Radio’s College Podcast Challenge is open for submissions. Students from around the country are invited to submit a podcast for a chance to have it featured on NPR and win a $5,000 scholarship. The deadline is Feb. 28. Apply now.

The KC Ad Club’s 2022-23 Foundation Scholarship is now open. The scholarship has been awarded for over 30 years and helps students set themselves apart from their peers and get involved in the thriving Kansas City advertising community. Deadline is March 4. Learn more and apply.

The Inez Y. Kaiser Greater Kansas City-Public Relations Society of America Memorial Student Scholarships portal is open for 2022 applications. The deadline is March 11. The scholarships are in recognition of Inez Kaiser’s national legacy as the first Black woman to join PRSA in 1966 and the 75th anniversary of PRSA. Black junior or first-semester seniors enrolled in a public relations or communications program at an accredited college or university are eligible to apply. The Elizabeth Miller Watkins Memorial Scholarship is an annual, renewable award for female identifying students of all disciplines admitted or attending the University of Kansas. A minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need is required. Special consideration is given to first-generation students and current or incoming residents of Watkins and Miller Halls. Awards are administered at $4,000 annually for a maximum award amount of $16,000 per student during their time of study. The Sinclair Broadcast Diversity Scholarship is designed for qualifying and deserving students from underrepresented minority groups interested in a career in broadcast, digital journalism or marketing. The deadline is April 30. Get more information and apply here.
Get free food and compete for prizes at Wall Street Wednesdays
The University Daily Kansan is partnering with The Wall Street Journal, the School of Business and Flip'd for Wall Street Wednesdays, a series of events designed to enhance student engagement with The Wall Street Journal. Each event begins at 12:20 p.m. with a quiz on the main ideas encapsulated in articles and stories reported in The Wall Street Journal the previous week. This is followed by a short discussion led by a faculty expert on a recent story from the newspaper. The event concludes by 12:50 p.m. with prizes for the top three scorers on the quiz and a light snack. The next event is Feb. 16. Learn more and register here.
CAREER & OUTREACH CENTER
Direct Action and Research Training Center will hold an information session at 5 p.m. Feb. 16 to discuss careers in community organizing. All KU students and recent graduates are welcome, particularly students graduating before August 2022. RSVP here.

The Ballard Center, 708 Elm St., is accepting applications for its volunteer public relations program. Participants will work with the director of outreach and communications on various projects, including social media, quarterly newsletters and the annual report. The program, which allows students to work at the center and remotely, begins in February and continues through early May. Apply here.
Next J-School Career Fair is March 3
The Spring Journalism and Mass Communications Career Fair is Thursday, March 3, at Stauffer-Flint Hall. The in-person event, open to all majors and classes, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A professional photographer will be in Room 113 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to take portraits for students’ LinkedIn profiles. Business professional or business casual is the recommended attire for the fair, where organizations will be sharing more details on internship and job opportunities. Event to feature Professor Hyunjin Seo discussing her new book
The Center for East Asian Studies is hosting a book talk featuring Professor Hyunjin Seo’s book on network-facilitated activism in South Korea ("Networked Collective Actions: The Making of an Impeachment"). The event on Feb. 15 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Zoom is in partnership with the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications, the Institute for Policy & Social Research and the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures. Associate Professor Teri Finneman to give Budig lecture on Feb. 24
Associate Professor Teri Finneman, the recipient of the 2021-2022 Gretchen and Gene Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing, will present a lecture on the vital role of student writers at noon Feb. 24 in the Clarkson Gallery in Stauffer-Flint Hall. In her lecture, "Reimagining Roles: Student Writers Serving Kansas Communities," Finneman will share the opportunities and challenges of using student writing to help fill information gaps in Kansas small towns. The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications is offering professional development webinars this spring for alumni and industry professionals to learn more about analytics, inclusive messaging and digital storytelling.
