THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Associate Professor Mugur Geana is the co-principal investigator for a $2.5 million National Institutes of Health grant to improve COVID-19 testing and vaccines among women leaving incarceration. Dr. Geana will work with co-PI Professor Megha Ramaswamy and teams of researchers from KU Medical Center, University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Alabama, and RTI to adapt and test a tailored online education platform designed at the school's Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Populations (Managing Technology, Content, and User Experience: An mHealth Intervention to Improve Women's Health Literacy after Incarceration). The project will provide further development to this digital platform that is easy to deploy, scalable, updatable, and essential for rapid evidence-based health information dissemination to underserved populations, especially in public health emergencies, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. Lecturer Gerri Berendzen had a session proposal accepted for the 2022 national conference of ACES: The Society for Editing. She will present “Fact-checking on the fly.”

Ph.D. candidate Harrison Rosenthal’s column “A Case for Rediscovering Classical Democratic Free Speech Perspectives” was published in Media Law Notes, the trade journal of AEJMC’s Law & Policy Division. He argues for critical normative re-evaluation of free-speech jurisprudence using classical political frames — discussing how the neoliberal marketplace of ideas was not a constitutionally foregone conclusion. Graduate student Manzur Maswood’s paper “Is There a Relation Between Vaccine Hesitancy and Fast Development of Vaccines?” was accepted for presentation at two conferences: the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Midwinter Conference 2022, which is March 4-5 in Norman, Oklahoma, and the International Crisis and Risk Communication (ICRC) Conference, which is March 7-9, in Orlando, Florida.

Presenters needed for KSPA conference next month
We are seeking presenters for the 2022 Kansas Scholastic Press Association Conference on Feb. 14 in the Kansas Union. It’s been two years since the student journalists of Kansas have gathered to share ideas, learn new skills and celebrate their incredible work. The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications has supported KSPA for decades by hosting events like these and providing experts to visit with students for 40 minutes and share a skill that will help them in their high school work. The most popular topics are:
  • Visual journalism: video, photography, graphic design
  • Writing: reporting, interviewing, research
  • Leadership: editing, team building, staff management
  • Sports: writing, jobs in sports
  • Software: Adobe products, Google tools, etc.
Please remember that these skills can be basic and intermediate. Please don’t feel that you need to revamp a presentation or invent something new. Please sign up by Feb. 1.
Questions? Contact Eric Thomas, KSPA executive director and J-School lecturer.
